Carl Franz has been showing off logging trains on the Cass for over 20 years. In cooperation with the Cass Scenic Railroad of West Virginia, he has run logging trains through the woods, up switchbacks, and with double headed trains! The Spectaculars ran in spring, fall and winter. Carl, along with his friend Robert Flack, captured some of the most fantastic material ever shot of logging trains on 16mm film. In this DVD you will see Shay’s #2, #3, #4, #5, and Heisler #6 work logging trains up to lofty Bald Knob (4,842 ft.). You’ll also witness action with Western Maryland Shay #6 on the Durbin branch, (the now extinct ex-C&O Greenbriar branch). The winter shots are really spectacular, some in blinding blizzards!…and the spring and fall shots will also take your breath away! Beside breathtaking runbys, there is action of each of these trains filmed from special photo trains, as well as the traditional all steam train race near the Cass station! There are NO tourist trains in these shots…just logging trains! In addition, this DVD includes more than 15 minutes of film from the predecessor to the Cass, the Mower Lumber Company. This 16mm color footage shows actual logging operations of Mower and other footage from Cass, shot by photographer Robert Flack! The Mower Company footage includes log loaders and skidders, log trains being loaded, switched, dumped, and logs being dragged by the ‘green chain’ into the mill!… in fact just the Mower footage is worth the price of this DVD!!!…its that good!

This program covers lots of great shay action on the Cass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia which includes doubleheaders, Triple-Headers, freight trains, passenger trains, logging factories, & a mix of both vintage films & modern videotape from both the ground, & high in the sky from a helicopter. From the oldest shay in the collection which is number 5, to the last standard gauge shay ever built, & even the largest: Western Maryland Big 6, there is a lot of good action from Cass to Whitaker at Camp 1, Bald Knob, The Wye at Milepost 9, Old Spruce to connect the mainline to Elkins on the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley, & even on the once washed-out Cass to Durbin line.

Aside from the Shays, there are also some diesels like Western Maryland BL-2 number 7172 for instance, plus Heisler 6 built in Erie PA in 1929, as well as lots of onboard footage from the coaches, flatbeds, cabooses, & cabs of the engines, & even visit the shops, with the railroad crossings at the Cass Station, Bear Mountain Road, & Gum Road before the first switchback to Whittaker. Plus there is an interview from Jim Bisline, as well as a blizzard in 1975.

The Green Frog crew made a visit to the Cass Scenic Railroad in the Spring of 1995, while the vintage films were shot by Bob Flatt, as well as plenty of detailed narration from Bob Carerra.

Shay number 3, originally Mount Emily Lumber company 1, operated for several years in the east, before the engine made a transcontinental return to the west in Oregon.
