By 1958, mainline steam in the United States was geting to be very rare. There were still pockets of hold out, but Don Krofta had already filmed those survivors. So he went North to Canada where steam power was still a prime mover of freight and passengers. By 1960, steam would be rare North of the border too, but Don was able to catch Canadian National and Canadian Pacific steam on these trips to Ontario.
In four trips, Don caught steam at London, Sudbury, Windsor, Palmerston and Stratford. Thanks to his efforts we see a lot of steam, CN power includes 4-6-, 4-6-2, 4-6-2, 4-8-0, 4-8-2, 2-8-0, 2-8-2 while the Canadian Pacific was rostering 2-8-0, 2-8-2 and 4-6-2 and 4-6-4 steamers in Ontario. We’ll also see a few of those new fangled diesels.
