“She was a 365-days-a-year railfan excursion…she was the train that behaved like a Caribbean cruise ship, inviting you to loaf and look, dine and drink, with ultimate destination beside the point,” * So wrote David P. Morgan, past editor of Trains Magazine in the July 1976 issue of that magazine. From the camera of noted photographer Emery Gulash comes the most awesome experience: a complete trip on the California Zephyr! Filmed in 1965, when the CZ was at its ultimate, Emery’s camera takes you from dome to trackside, from the cab through the ‘Big-10’ curves and tunnels West of Denver, From Chicago to San Francisco.

Never has there been such on and off train coverage of probably America’s most well known and favored train… The California Zephyr. Thrill to the incredible diversity of scenery, the first class service, F-7’s all the way to the West coast, incredible cab scenes from Denver-West through tunnels and the Big 10 curves, and thrilling run-bys as only Emery Gulash can provide.

Filmed in gorgeous 16 mm color, this is a DVD you will watch over and over again. Live the luxury of the past, through mountains, across the plains, meets with the other CZ’s as well as freight and passenger trains…and a surprise meet with Burlington steam loco 5632 as she passes the CZ on a for railfans only runby!

Originally released in 1990, this program covers the westbound journey from Chicago to San Francisco on the CB&Q from Chicago to Denver with a ride aboard the dome car & also on the rear of the train, Rio Grande from Denver to Salt Lake City with a cab ride on F-unit 5574 through the Continental Divide over the Summit of the Rockies to Glenwood Springs & transferred to Western Pacific power to end at Oakland. Along the way, there are plenty of trackside scenes with freight that includes the now Preserved F-unit number 5771 on various passenger trains. Before that happens, Filmmaker Emery Goulash takes the New York Central Wolverine from Detroit to Chicago. Later on, Northern 5632 also makes a cameo appearance during an excursion in the 1950s or 1960s.

The Cab Ride through the Colorado Rockies was also used on another Green Frog title: Trains Trains Trains for Kids with KC Frog the puppet.

Nowadays, only Amtrak is in charge of the most Iconic streamlined routes in Western America.

The music throughout the journey is epically awesome.
