Journey back to 1985 and 1989 with Arthur Purchase as we take a look at footage he shot in California on two different trips. Starting in Northern California, we follow a train south on the Cascade Mainline and then we chase a McCloud River steam excursion powered by 2-6-2 #25 with an SD38-2 trailing.

You will also visit other landmarks, such as Stockton Tower and Tehachapi Loop, a visit to the Sierra Railroad, Amador Central and the Trona railroads are shown, all three being powered by ancient Baldwin diesels. Street running is shown on the Central California Traction and see a rare export only model General Electric U8B on the Santa Maria Valley Railroad.

Early CALTRAIN is seen in action during the early years, with Southern Pacific GP9’s seen pulling both Harriman commuter cars and Bi-Levels, along with a GP40P-2 and SDP45 working alongside newly delivered CALTRAIN F40PH’s.

If you love California or any of the numerous railroads that operated in the Golden State, this is one program that you will not want to miss!

This is vintage eighties footage, shot using equipment of the day. It is not as sharp as programs shot today. Still, these are interesting scenes of long-gone railroads and equipment.

  1. Curtis Watson

Love seeing some familiar sights, as well as some new ones, from my home state and, in the case of the Amador Central, a railroad I’m familiar with but hadn’t seen too much footage in. McCloud was also a treat to watch. This was a very good addition to my collection.

  2. ArtyArtArt

Excellent video. Both shorelines and the class ones are seen, as well as CalTrans.

Some pretty rare footage, from CalTran F40PH pulling Harriman commuter cars, Amador Central and Southwest Portland Cement is seen

Excellent purchase on my part. Great value for the content inside.
