Produced with the cooperation of the B&M Railroad Historical Society. This all color, crisp 16mm film presentation, takes us to the fall and winter of 1951…back to the days of steam and no diesels as we see the steam to diesel transition on the B&M.
Stanley Whitney and his camera captured operations in the Boston suburbs with all the troubles that winter can bring. We see Plow Extras work to keep the line open. And these are busy lines as commuter trains hustle back and forth. We visit Boston’s North Station where steam in the form of 2-6-0s, 4-6-2s and 4-8-4s are on duty…and now quite a collection of diesels too. This is a well-filmed look at the Boston & Maine. This is Volume 2 of this 2 volume series.

In part 2 of this series which was captured through the films of Mr. Stanley Y. Whitney, there is more action in Massachusetts, at locations like North Station in Boston way before the debut of the Mass Bay Transit Authority Commuter Rail as well as Amtrak’s Downeastern, Greenwood depot which is near Melrose & Wakefield that is now part of the MBTA Commuter Rail’s Haverhill line, Reading, Crystal Lake, Melrose Highlands, Wakefield Junction, Ballardvale which is between Wilmington & Lawrence, Cooper Street Bridge, somewhere on the Newburyport Branch, & Wilmington Junction which is the Commuter Rail’s Lowell line & the Amtrak Connection to both the Lowell & Haverhill routes via the Wildcat Branch.
There are also some early diesels, as well as a couple of Snowplows.
At North Station, 0-6-0 number 426 the sister engine to 410 that is on display at Lowell is moving a Santa Fe Grand Canyon Line Boxcar, & in another scene, the Centipede tender on Mountain Class 4-8-2 number 4116 looks almost identical to the ones on the Milwaukee Road, & the 800 series northerns, 3800 & 3900 series challengers, & the mighty Big Boys on the Union Pacific.
