Come along on a steam safari in 2021, as we see six locomotives in action in six states.

We begin in Pennsylvania, where once again Norfolk & Western Class J #611 was brought in from her home in Roanoke, Virginia.  The big 4-8-4 was fired up for select weekends through the summer and early fall, and she is seen along with Strasburg’s own Norfolk & Western Class M 4-8-0 #475 and former Canadian National 2-6-0 #89.

From the farmlands of Pennsylvania, we travel west to the mountains of South Dakota’s Black Hills to see Mallet Compound 2-6-6-2T #110 on the Black Hills Central.  Our shoot lasted six days, and we were able to capture the locomotive working hard on the steep grades of the line.  The sound at times was deafening, and with a great sound system might just rearrange your furniture!  We shot several pacing scenes in addition to trackside runbys, and this is some of the best footage we have ever shot.

Next, we head to Michigan where another locomotive wearing the number 110 turned 110 years old in 2021: former Little River Railroad 4-6-2 #110.  This year found the locomotive lettered for her second owner: the Smoky Mountain Railroad of Knoxville, Tennessee, where she ran from 1940 to 1954.  Our visit caught the locomotive making a rare extended run to Hillsdale, Michigan.  On the way, we caught some of the fastest running you’ll ever see with the smallest standard gauge Pacific ever built in the U.S.

Following looks at the smallest Pacific and one of the smallest articulateds to be found, we wrap up our show with Union Pacific Big Boy #4014 running across Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois.  We present highlights of four days of shooting on legs that took the train from North Little Rock to Poplar Bluff, St. Louis, Jefferson City and Kansas City.

It’s nearly two hours of great footage of steam in action!

In this instalment of the Steamin’ in series, there is an impression of Elmer from Looney Tunes before the opening credits.

Now on to the segments during the second year of the present decade:

    1. The Strasburg Railroad with not only Canadian National 89 as well as Norfolk & Western 475, but also the second visit from N&W Class J 4-8-4 number 611 operating in Lancaster County Pennsylvania from late May to early October before it was disassembled for inspection from November of 2021 to September of 2022 & after the reassembly, 611 operated a few more trips in November of ’22 (where at the same time, 475 suffered a major accident at Leaman Place Junction in Paradise), & for the final time in May of ’23 before 611 heads back home to Roanoke. Between November of ’22 & May of ’23, 611 was temporarily on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania across the street from the depot.

    2. The Black Hills Central in South Dakota near Mt. Rushmore with former Weyerhauser Timber Co. (later Rayonier logging in Washington State) 2-6-6-2 tank engine 110 while 2-6-2 number 7 sits silent on display during late July. Note: this is the longest segment in this program.

    3. The Little River Railroad in Coldwater Michigan with another steam engine number 110 but it’s the smallest standard gauge 4-6-2 for the engine’s namesake Birthday.

And 4. The Best for last just like “Steamin’ in 2019”: Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 number 4014 on its 80th birthday tour from Cheyenne Wyoming to New Orleans Louisiana & back in August & September as this was the very first time that a mainline steam locomotive was equipped with Positive Train Control. Note: just like the Great Southwest Circle tour, these scenes of the beast were also shown in another Diverging Clear title: Big Boy 4014 in the Midwest.
