East, out of Roanoke, Virginia is the famous Blue Ridge Grade. Trains have had trouble on this grade for a hundred years. During the steam era it was not uncommon to double or triple the hill…or to put double or triple the power on the train.

“Assault on Asheville” shows us what a STEAM TRIPLE-HEADER on the incredible grade looks like. Join us for the assault on the Blue Ridge Grade as we head to Asheville!

In the Berkshire version of the 1989 NRHS Convention, which is also the sequel to the 611/587 Independence Limited, the 2 engines along with 1218 perform a special one-way tripleheader from Roanoke to Lynchburg Virginia while heading to Asheville NC for the convention on July 16th of that year which also includes the 1918 Baldwin built Mikado carrying 4 boxcars of bricks to Salisbury NC, later on 1218 leads 611 on a doubleheader, as well as when 1218 teams up with 587 at the convention to Asheville from Salisbury in the pouring rain later on during the photo runby.

Locations include Roanoke, Blue Ridge Parkway, the N&W Overlook, Webster, Blue Ridge Bend at the S Curves, Bedford, a photo run-by at the Otter River Bridge, Lynchburg where the 3 engines split up, Evington, Altavista, Smothers, the Dan River Bridge at Danville, Stokesland, Browns Summit North Carolina, Greensboro, Thomasville, Lexington, Salisbury with an Amtrak Station, Alexandria, Cozeville, James River Viaduct, Deal siding, Bentley, Reidsville which is the headquarters of Lucky Strikes Cigarettes, Spencer over the Yadkin River Bridge, Statesville, the Catawba River Bridge, Claremont, Hickory, Drexel, the balloon loops & Andrew’s Geyser at Old Fort, & Swannanoah Tunnel at Ridgecrest.

There are also some historic silent films of N&W steam with music added, as one of the N&W articulated engines push an Oscar Meyer Hot Dog Box Car in the yard on one scene.

Aside from Berkshire, there are other producers who also attended before and/or during the ’89 NRHS Convention: America by Rail Co-Creator Greg Scholl, a long-gone out of business company by the name of Trackside Video, Dave Goodheart Productions, & a handful of others.

This is one of the couple Berkshire titles to be Narrated by Roger Morris, with some extra footage by Steve Neff.
