Giant steam locomotives on 9 railroads across America from the 1930s to the 1950s – and presented in Widescreen TV format! From B&O’s EM1 2-8-8-4s to UP’s Big Boys, you’ll find the biggest of the big: 2-6-6-2, 2-6-6-4, 2-8-8-2, plus 2-8-8-4, 4-8-8-2, 4-6-6-4, and 4-8-8-4 locomotives on Western Maryland, B&O, C&O, N&W, D&RGW, DM&IR, Southern Pacific, and Union Pacific.

Over 80 locomotives are featured in this show!, including newer material from N&W 1218, UP 3985 and UP 4014. Also, 2-6-6-2s on four Western Logging railroads. Fantastic action of these giants in actual service.

Rare film and video, with sound, 95% in color. One hour and 29 minutes of articulated action. Narrated by Danny Harmon. Viewing without narration is an option.

  1. rickyfreni

Produced before the first trips of C&O 1309 on the WMSR, there are not only mostly vintage films, but also some modern era action that includes a couple in Europe in the opening as well as brief history of these mighty monsters.

The road names shown in order are:

    1. B&O with EL Class 2-8-8-0s & EM-1 Class 2-8-8-4s Yellowstones with a cameo from newly built SP Cab Forward 4176 in 1937 & one from Seaboard (since Scrapped).

    2. WM with Challengers (since Scrapped)

    3. C&O with 2-6-6-2s & 2-6-6-6s with an 0-10-0 & a 4-8-2 plus a couple from the Virginian.

    4. N&W with the Class A 2-6-6-4s, Y Class 2-8-8-2s, & since been scrapped Z class 2-6-6-2s, plus a turbine, & 1218 with 611 at the 1987 NRHS Convention & to St. Louis in 1990

    5. D&RGW with 2-8-8-2s & a mention of the Challengers (most of the Rio Grande Standard Gauge Steam engines were scrapped after 1956)

    6. NP with Challengers (since scrapped)

    7. DM&IR with the Yellowstones like 225 being paced that is now on display in Proctor for instance & some 2-10-4s

    8. SP with Cab Forwards & AC-9s (only 4294 survives) with a 4-8-2

    9. UP with Challengers & Big Boys plus the 9000 series 4-12-2s & 800 series 4-8-4s as well as 3985 on CSX in 1992, plus 4005 at its new home in 1970, & 4014 to Pomona in 1962 with the fall 2019 trip after being restored

And 10. a variety of Logging operations: Southwest Lumber Mills, & Rayonier with 2-8-2 90, & the Black Hills Central with 110 in 2021
