Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 765 was restored by the Ft. Wayne Railroad Historical Society in Ft. Wayne, Indiana and first operated in December of 1979. It ran a lot of excursions in the mid-1980’s to 1993. Our show features a brief period in 1982 where the engine was leased to the NS Steam program, since they were short of steam power, and newly restored N&W 611 was operating trips further east on the system.

We begin with some background info on the engine, followed by some scenes of a one way trip from Cincinnati toward Lexington in 1982. This features a couple of really nice shots on the steep Erlanger Hill climbing out of the Ohio River Valley. Next is footage of the two day Lexington to Chattanooga trips on October 2nd and 3rd, 1980. This takes us through the famous Southern Railway’s Rat Hole both directions. As an added bonus 765 is sporting a lovely 3-chime Pennsylvania Railroad whistle for this weekend. We end with a couple extra scenes of 765 heading home from Cincinnati in November 1982.

Our next segment features 765 on 3 trips out of Buffalo, NY to Corning, NY, shot by Paul Cooledge. These are are on the former Erie Lackawanna, and features some nice action shots. These are also nice clean sound video scenes, transferred from Super 8 sound films.

BONUS: We include the Nickel Plate public relations film “The Nickel Plate Story.” You’ll learn about the system, and train handling in yards, and see lots of engines just like 765, those great looking Nickel Plate Berkshires (2-8-4s). There is also some footage from unique angles like from the cab and low ground level scenes. Watch coal being unloaded at the docks, and cars being switched at the yard as time freights stick to the schedule. Maps guide you with the narrator in this color company presentation. This NKP public relations film is 18 minutes.

If you are a fan of our most beloved Berk, then you cannot go wrong with this one…. Some great older footage of the 765 establishing herself as a reliable excursion locomotive…

In this recent sequel to the 1979 & 1980 trips with the 1944 Lima Ohio built Berkshire itself from 2014, Greg used his super 8mm sound film camera to capture 765 in early fall of 1982. Which includes a one way move from Ludlow to Lexington Kentucky on September 24 via Erlanger hill, an October 2 & 3rd round trip from Lexington to Chattanooga via the Rathole, & even a One Way trip from Ludlow to Bellevue on November 21.

During the background information, a clip from 765 the early years was used as well as 2716 & 4501 from the newly released Southern Steam in the 70s, plus the early years of 611 in 1982 & 1983.

During Greg’s first full year of his railroad video business in 1985, Camera operator Paul Cooledge filmed 765 on short trips between Buffalo & Corning New York on the weekend of June 8 & 9 that year, Plus a bonus encore on June 15, not to mention a One Way trip from Youngstown.

Finally there is a bonus Public Domain film called the NKP story which was made in 1952.

The 80’s trips with 765 ran for 40 minutes while the bonus 1952 film ran for 18 minutes.

Overall, Chris Kovacs did a decent job narrating this title.
