N&W 1218 is sidelined now, her rebuild interrupted when Norfolk Southern ended their steam program in the 1990s. But, this is the story of her return to steam in 1987. In three shows we see her leaving the Birmingham Shops for her break in run, then we see her first official excursion up Christiansburg Mountain and finally we see this huge 2-6-6-4 at the head of a 100 car coal train.

See 1218 in action – and hear 1218 as her distinctive whistle is heard as well as her beefy stack talk – in three shows:
* Breaking in N&W 1218, 35 minutes
* Thunder on Christiansburg Mountain, 42 minutes
* 1218 Pulls a 100 Car Coal Train, 25 minutes

    With shows from MLMP, you will get enjoyable programs IF you know what to expect.

    These shows from the excursion era tend to be shot on consumer grade equipment, and frequently hand held. If you want a slick program, Greg Scholl covered two of these segments and Hopewell covered the inaugural Roanoke trips.

    If you want competently shot amateur footage of events that will not be repeated, you will enjoy what you get.

    Also, as far as I know, none of the “big guys” were on hand to film 1218 on a 100 car empty hopper train. This part is worth the price of admission alone!

    In short, don’t expect a slick production and you will enjoy the action the videographer captured.

  2. Will Davis

    Some AWFUL quality footage in this DVD. I shot video of my ride on the 1218 in 1988 with a prosumer VHS camcorder and the footage was FAR superior to the entire second and third segments of this DVD.

  3. Jeremy C. Schultz

    These segments of 1218’s first trips in 1987 may be of “older” quality, yet are still exciting as ever! The first show is of her “break-in runs” at the Norfolk Southern steam shops in Birmingham, Alabama and beyond. The second video is of her first passenger trips out of Roanoke up Christiansburg Grade and Blue Ridge Grade. The third and final segment is of 1218 pulling a 100 car coal train from Norfolk to Crewe, Virginia.

    If you are a fan of articulated steam giants, or just N&W Class A #1218 in general, this is footage you simply CANNOT miss having in your collection! 🙂

    This trilogy primarily focuses on three separate trips performed by 1218 during its first year in excursion service.
