In this city – named for a railroad – steam was welcomed back to town in a big way when Frisco 1522 steamed through in 1993. Centralia, Illinois (named for the Illinois Central) hosted 1522 for two days of steam excursions over a weekend in June of 1993 as part of Norfolk Southern’s mid-90’s steam program. These excursions followed the Norfolk Southern St. Louis District from St. Louis to Centralia then south on Burlington Northern rails to Sesser, Illinois for a turn on the wye there and then came back down the line to Centralia.
br>Power for both trips is, in 1993, the country’s only operational 4-8-2 “Mountain” Type locomotive – Frisco 1522. The 1522 is owned National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis. Frisco by then had been folded into the Burlington Northern, so this was a return to home rails! 1522 was in tip-top shape and ran flawlessly during the excursions.
br>NOTE: This footage is not up to today’s quality and clarity standards, but is presented as a historical record – and downright fun video!

A flashback to 1993 features the 1926 Baldwin Built Mountain Class 4-8-2 operating a fan-trip during the great flood of the Midwest, that is now on display at the National Museum of Transportation in the Hot Spot of Kirkwood Missouri after operating from 1988 to 2002.

Locations for 1522’s 1993 trips that were filmed by George Redmond which several scenes were also used in various titles by Diverging Clear Productions includes New Bayden IL, Venice (not Italy) with the trio of Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis SW1200 Diesel Switchers & EMD Chopped-Nose Geeps on both the Gateway Western & Gateway Eastern, Luther Yard in East St. Louis with the Merchants Bridge over the Mississippi River & a Freight with both Burlington Northern & Grand Trunk Power, Belleville Hill with an Illinois Central Freight, Shiloh Station Road, Alberts, Centralia with the BN Yard at Cesser, Woodmont, Dulcee with some pacing, Obaiden, & ends at the State Route 3 bridge near downtown St. Louis.

All in all, Aaron Gonthier did a fantastic job narrating this program.

This 1522 trip from St. Louis to Sesser was very well documented by George Redmond of Black 5 Video Collection. I bought this DVD directly from Green Frog Productions a couple years ago. It is a great “go-to” video for a rainy day. Be sure to crank up the volume… The sounds are unbelievable! You will ALWAYS enjoy the stack-talk and whistle action of our most beloved 4-8-2. She never ceases to amaze.
