Delray Tower is Detroit, Michigan’s busiest railroad Hot Spot. Located at Delray Junction on the south side of Detroit and along Interstate 75 just north of the River Rouge, it’s where seven railroads come together: Conrail, Norfolk Southern, CSX, Grand Trunk, Canadian Pacific, Canadian National and Amtrak. Shot in the 1990’s, this video features this busy bottleneck that was used to funnel through 60-90 trains per day as they ran in and out of Detroit. Delray interlocking Tower consists of a grade level crossing of the double-track Norfolk Southern (ex Wabash) and CSX (ex Chesapeake & Ohio) that crossed and joined the double-track Conrail (ex New York Central) mainline. The train action consists of mainline freights, locals, intermodal, coal, and transfers, plus light power moves.
Dan –
If it was rolling on American rails in the 1990’s, you could probably find it at Delray Junction. And this superb video shows it all … multiple railroads, fallen flags, a variety of locomotive types, colorful paint schemes, fascinating consists, cabooses and more … all with the picturesque Delray Tower as a backdrop. The video was shot in all seasons (there is some particularly nice footage of Conrail locomotives in swirling snow), and all of it … the videography, the editing and the image quality … is excellent. They’re scenes that can never be recreated; thank you, Plets Express, for keeping the memories alive!
