In the panhandle of northwestern Nebraska, coal trains from Wyoming’s Powder River Basin battle a mountain grade through an epic setting. On the BNSF timetable, this is a thirteen-mile section of the Butte Subdivision between Alliance, Nebraska and Edgemont, South Dakota. Railroaders and railfans know it as Crawford Hill.

Volume 2 picks up where we left off in Volume 1 and covers the Boston and Maine under Guilford between April of 1983 and February of 1984, including run through pool power, between Hoosac Tunnel and Haverhill Massachusetts.

This series is a look at the last years of the Boston & Maine and its inclusion into the Guilford system.
