Each of the six films included in this program is a vintage gem! See railroading as it was in the 1950s and the 1970s. Excellent vintage film footage! Here’s what you’ll experience in Workin’ on the Santa Fe:
Team Effort Track repairmen learn safe handling techniques for the many tools they’ll use, such as the spike maul, pick and sledge, claw bar, lining bar, rail fork, and others.
Count the Seconds Yard workers learn what happens when safety isn’t uppermost in mind as they work around moving equipment!
The Continuing Challenge Santa Fe mounted a camera underneath an empty car to find out why derailments occurred on high-speed trains in 1974, with shocking results!
Barstow: Nerve Center in the Desert See the construction efforts that enabled Santa Fe to move 4,000 cars in and out of the “new yard at Barstow” every day.
The Argentine Yard – A Design for Tomorrow. Santa Fe’s new systems process up to 3,100 cars a day, twice as many as before computerization.

The Questar version I have got the same training and promotional films as well as the bonus features of SP 4449.

  2. Mwdonoughue

This program showcases training and promotional films made by the Santa Fe during the 1960s and 1970s, while the Questar version includes three bonus features on the Southern Pacific ‘Daylight’ #4449.

  3. Michael W Donoughue

I own the Questar version, which includes three bonus features that showcase some of SP 4449’s most memorable trips during the 1980s.

  4. Dylan Jones

This film shows exactly what railroads go through to keep America and the world moving each and every day. Shows what the Maintenance of Way crews to while maintaining the track and Railroad infistructure and what the train crews have to do to build the trains.

Historical, dating back to the 1950’s. This is a very interesting video collection on safety practices, the building of the Barstow yard, and the Argentine yard at work not long after it opened. An added addition is a study on what could cause a derailment. I found it interesting to see things like proper lifting techniques, and how best to swing a mallet. How to get on and off rail cars, and how best to give signals. And there is a story with a rail road worker who makes a new purchase, only to receive damaged goods (Pay Day). Here the railroad man’s story as to where the damage could have occurred. There is a wide variety of 1st generation diesels, including turbines. Lots of yard work with humping action at Argentine, and mainline action as well. Anything that you want to see… it’s all here. The interest in this one video is really something else. Everyone including the kids enjoy this video. For my boys, they like to say “Dad, is that what it was like when You were a boy, along time ago?” lol. I am very pleased to have this video in my collection. A “Must Have” for rail enthusiests and fans alike.
