Winter action on the Wisconsin Central in January, 1999, just a couple of winters prior to the Canadian National take-over. The WC is still independent in this video, however you can see the shape of things to come as the Canadian National has trackage rights. New welded rail is in place and train speeds are higher than just a few years before as increasing traffic means better maintenance and new facilities. We’ll visit a couple of hot-spots, Junction City and Byron Hill for all the action. See WC, CN, CP, NS, CSX and Conrail in fair weather and foul, everything from bright sunny and frigid days to heavy snow, and raw ugly rain.

The kind of weather that makes you appreciated railfanning from the comfort of your living room! And knowing that Wisconsin Central’s days are numbered adds a kind of melancholy that has nothing to do with the weather. The WC paint scheme looks great in any conditions, and locomotives from several Class 1 railroads make appearances in some of Wisconsin’s most well-known railfan locations. The videography is well done, especially in the harsh conditions … even the sunshine seems cold. Much has changed since this footage was shot more than 20 years ago, and this is a great look back at a different era in American railroading. The train action is fantastic, even if the weather isn’t!

This video was made not to long before the greedy Canadian National got their hands on this regional railroad and sent the Wisconsin Central to the history books. So, with the CNR already having trackage rights, we see plenty of action that would not have been seen only a few years before. And not to forget the run through action of the CSX and NS. The winter scenes are very enjoyable as we watch the trains kicking up the snow. As the hours tick down on the WC, it is great to see all this wonderful action in the prime of winter. Well done.

If you like a variety of motive power this is a great choice. A good mix of CN, WC and foreign power. The narration was slightly vague to me who didn’t know much about the area being filmed but had a lot of great run bys.

This video captures rare winter footage of a fondly remembered Wisconsin Central rail road. One of my favorite videos, the action is non stop and the maroon and gold really pop in the winter scence. This video is a must for any WC fan.

… you’ll like this program. We’ll see Wisconsin Central power, but a lot of other roads appear heer too. This is just before the Wisconsin Central sold out to Canadian National. The WC is really at her hay day heer. All in all, with the interesting weather, a great video
