It’s winter in the Upper Mississippi River Valley, and the lonely sounds of trains echo through the snowy stillness. This is an area of heavy mainline operations, and when there’s freight to be moved, the depth of winter can’t keep the cars from rolling. Witness the action on the rails of the Soo Line; Burlington Northern; Chicago & North Western; Chicago Central; Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern; and the Green Bay & Western. Pentrex cameras capture train after train crossing the covered landscape, kicking up clouds of snow dust in their passing.
The lines run along the frozen banks of the Mississippi River or cross it on scenic bridges in the area between Clinton, Iowa and Winona, Minnesota. We follow the tracks as they wind along the river bluffs and climb out of the valley. The important junctions and diamonds in the towns of Savanna, Illinois; Dubuque, Iowa; and La Crosse, Wisconsin provide us with plenty of lineside action. Newly painted locomotives gleam under the sunny skies of a crisp January day. Railroad workers trudge through the snow to uncouple cars and sweep out switches. Rarely seen cabooses in surprising numbers can be spotted on this area’s trains. There’s no end to the beauty and drama of railroading in Winter Along the Upper Mississippi River Valley.

“Where nature smiles for three hundred miles!” the CB&Q wasn’t kidding when they coined that slogan for their Twin Cities main. This is a great video of so many different railroads in the Upper Mississippi valley.

Originally released in 1993, this recently turned 30-year-old program captures a great variety of diesels on Soo Line with lots of cabooses that one is referenced to a Lehigh Valley 0-6-0 Tank Engine, Burlington Northern with one unit referenced to a Frisco 4-8-2 as well as a caboose, Canadian National, Chicago Central, Milwaukee Road, Illinois Central, Grand Trunk, Union Pacific, Chicago & Northwestern, General Motors, Electro-Motive Division, Amtrak’s Empire Builder with F40s (months before the debut of the Genesis units), Dakota Minnesota & Eastern, & the final months of the Green Bay & Western with a Jordan Spreader/Snowplow combo & its own caboose during January of ’93 at the temperature of 2 degrees below 0.
Locations include Marquette Iowa, Guttenberg, Dubuque Iowa with steam powered ferry boats stored for hibernation until much warmer weather comes a few months later, East Dubuque Illinois, East Cabin, Peosta crossing, Blanding IL, the Mississippi Palisades State Park, Savanna Diamond, the Sabula Swing Bridge, Clinton Yard with a planter’s peanut sign on the grain elevators, Lock & Dam number 9 near Linksville Wisconsin, Ferryville, Stotter, Grand Crossing at North LaCrosse, the depot at LaCrosse, Another Swing Bridge on the river, River Junction, Dakota MN, Donehower Siding, Winona yard, Marshland, Arcadia, Dodge, & Red Mound WI.
Aside from the mainline action, there are eagles on the river.

Contemporary railroading when it was released in the early 1990s, “Winter Along The Upper Mississippi” has become a fascinating historical look at many of the Midwest’s fallen flag railroads. Long-gone color schemes, railroad operations from a generation ago and stunning winter scenery, all preserved through creative photography and interesting, informative narration. Keep this one close to the TV … you’re going to want to watch it again and again!

There are some videos you put in and watch once, then there are some you cant even make it through. Then there is one like this that you can watch over and over again. This video has a lot of interesting no longer scene motive power, and cabooses. I would defiantly give this one a watch and you will be hooked.

Watching trains at any time is always great, but winter running is just a tad more exciting. What some people may think it lacks in scenery and colour being winter is made up for knowing the difficulties that railroads have battling winter. This video is exciting just watching the challenges that cold weather and snow can bring. A great video and pleased it is in my video collection

Great film with lots of great action. See the Soo line; BN ; The Chicago & Northern Western; The Chicago Centeral and many more. Here the far lonely sounds of train horns ecoing in the winter nights and thru the pass’s. Lots and lots of train action. Great scenery all the way. 5 Stars for this one.

The upper Mississippi River Valley is a jewel of train watching activity! The scenery is great, trains are plentiful along multiple railroads (currently BNSF, CN and CP). During this video Pentrex takes you back to a time of the CC, BN, DME and the SOO Line. GREAT ACTION watching these classic railroads running through some beautiful territory!!! Travel to the upper Mississippi River valley and you will see why the locals refer to it as “God’s Country”

Watch some wintertime railroading along the Mississippi. see older fallen flags, and seen that can never be repeated, if you like winter time railroading, this is a must have

I am surprised I am giving it this rating, but I realize too much time was spent in Clinton showing repetitive CNW/SOO action, BN didn’t get enough love, and neither did the DME.

Great video showing fallen flags in action, like former Soo Line units and CNW before the merger. The Chicago Central before being purchased by the Illinois Central. Good narration and some nice scenic winter spots along the river. Good to see all the old time power before the advent of the wide cabs.
