Rio Grande 2-8-2 #483 leads on a October 1961 trip from Alamosa traveling through fall color. Then it’s two K-28 class engines on the Silverton Line, with the engines split for the high bridge. A helper is used on the return trip from Chama to Cumbres. Much of this is riding footage

In Oregon and Washington we see Spokane, Portland & Seattle 4-8-4 #700 east of Portland along the Columbia River. There is also a trip with Northern Pacific 2-8-2 #1911 to Battleground, and then with 4-8-4 number 2626 (the famous Timken “roller bearing” locomotive). Northern Pacific 4-8-4 #2686 is ridden from St. Paul to Staples, Minnesota in the summer of 1957. There are some trackside views including a runby, and servicing in Staples with an 0-8-0 switch engine. With 700 you see 3 different 4-8-4s.

We’re on a three day excursion from the Bay Area on the North Western Pacific with an assortment of 4-6-0 locomotives. This is a scenic segment along the Eel River, we mostly are on board for this, but there are some some photo runbys.

We have a seat behind Santa Fe 4-6-4 #3450 on a trip to Oakdale where the Sierra took over with engines 34 and 36 (1952). 3450 is a great looking Hudson. 34 and 36 are 2-8-0 wheel arrangement engines, and neither has operated for many years.

We also see an excursion on the Santa Maria Valley Railroad with engine 2-8-2 #21 in 1954. We also have 3 excursion appearances of Southern Pacific 4-8-4 #4460. One trip is the Fresno Flyer, and another is the final trip on the SP with steam on a 2-day trip to Reno from Oakland in 1958.

  1. Mwdonoughue

This DVD documents steam excursions pulled by locomotives from the respective railroads near the end of the steam era, with some future survivors being included as well.

  2. Collin Varney

Fantastic vintage steam Fan trips and absolutely beautiful music. I liked the Santa Fe segment the most with 3450 in action.

  3. rickyfreni

This program features a great variety of future famous survivors that are operating in the 50’s & early 60’s: rio grande 483, 486, 491, & the 470 series locomotives, SP&S 700, northwestern pacific 112, Santa Fe 3450, SP 1744, & 4460. Plus there are some other engines that were also shown in previous titles: NP 1911 & 2626, & WP 94. During the Santa Maria valley segment, Walt Disney himself was on that special. Like many of Greg’s 2017 programs minus the original 1987 editing of 1218 rebuilt & Roanoke bound this was narrated by Brian sellers.
