Here is mountain railroading in the east at its best. Multi-unit lash-ups of F7’s and Geeps were the mainstay of the WM. On three successive days, Emery shot considerable footage of the struggle through the Appalachians of these vintage trains. The photography–well what can you say…typical Gulash. With incredible composition, many in twilight add to this outstanding DVD of one of America’s most beautiful railroads!

Originally released in 1988 & re-issued from 1991, there are a great variety of diesels on not only the Western Maryland itself, but also appearances from the Baltimore & Ohio, Norfolk & Western, Chessie System & Chesapeake & Ohio.

Most of the lines covered in this nearly 35 year old show contains the abandoned portions from Connellsville Pennsylvania to Cumberland via the number 9 switch where if you go west from Cumberland to the number 9 switch, it is part of Today’s Western Maryland Scenic Railroad even though the tracks between the switch & Connellsville have since been removed.

Eventually, the WM also operates on the Elkins & Durbin West Virginia Line which most of these tracks have been thankfully preserved on the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley railroad.

One of the WM Geeps number 7470 seen in this feature is a reference to a Canadian National class O-18-A 0-6-0 which is preserved at the Conway Scenic Railroad in New Hampshire. Coverage of the steam engine can be found in “Twilight of Steam”.

One of the Chessie System Geeps number 3716 is a reference to a Canadian Pacific 2-8-0 on BC Rail once & now the Kettle Valley Scenic Railway.
