Union Pacific Challenger 3985 looks fantastic pulling its sleek passenger train over the formidable slopes of southern California’s Cajon Pass. The sight of the nation’s largest steam locomotive (at the time) thrilled thousands of trackside viewers, and the talented Pentrex camera crews were on hand at all the great photo locations to bring you this incredible steam event!

The huge 4-6-6-4 locomotive traveled to Southern California in May, 1994, to celebrate the Union Pacific Railroad Historical Society’s Los Angeles Chapter’s annual convention. We begin our coverage of the UP 3985 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and follow it over the Pass to Ontario. The Challenger put on quite a show during the two days of its excursion trips. You’ll see it steaming past the depot in San Bernardino, up through Devore, around Sullivan’s Curve and over Summit. Then it was a high speed run through Victorville and into Barstow where it was readied for its return trips.

The highlight of our coverage is an exciting ride in the cab of the Challenger as it conquers Cajon Pass! You’ll see what it’s like to sit behind the throttle and the firebox of this massive locomotive as it thunders up the long, strenuous climb. This is something likely never to be repeated as Union Pacific has now retired 3985. Join Pentrex and experience the thrill of UP steam power over Cajon Pass. This is steam railroading at its best!

Good video. Has a lot of great footage. Lots of awesome motive power!

  2. Jeremy C. Schultz

This was definitely an “appetizer” for witnessing Big Boy #4014 conquer the great Cajon in 2019. The Challenger never looked better in this DVD! 🙂

One of the most popular stretches of track in America, as well as the biggest operational steamer in the world (at the time) mean an unforgettable experience. UP goes all-out with their heritage fleet; though 844 is nowhere to be seen, we do see the three E Units that had been recently rebuilt. It’s almost like you’re back in the 50s with this one! Would highly recommend.

Great program with a lot of coverage of the 3985. Enjoyed the in Cab footage, and the runbys with the E Units working. First time seeing the program. Was worth the money seeing this engine that is now retired. Will be watching this one a lot.

Not only does the challenger appear in this late May 1994 visit to Southern California, but also E units 949, 951, & B unit 963. Along the way there are multiple freights on Union Pacific, southern pacific, & mostly Santa Fe which includes both the red & silver warbonets, & the old school blue & yellow units. One diesel each from CSX & Chicago & northwestern is also shown, & during the cab ride, there is a segment showing the 3985’s front driving wheels being up in flames. Not to mention being paced as well. In addition to pentrex, Bob McMillan of Valhalla video was also on the same trip.
