Travel with Pentrex to the busiest freight mainline in North America. Union Pacific’s Kearney Subdivision lies in the heart of central Nebraska. The 110-mile portion from North Platte to Gibbon Junction can see an average of 100 trains a day. In 1999, Union Pacific completed construction of a third main track to ease the congestion. Pentrex cameras captured some awesome railroading action here, including many meets and passes. This is Class One railroading at its best! Many different types of trains are seen rolling across the sand hills and between farm fields. We take extra time to view trains rounding Buttermilk Curve, the best spot for watching trains on the line. Coal shipments are a big reason for the increase in traffic on the Kearney Sub. But with the world’s largest classification yard at the west end of the line in North Platte, many freights traverse the triple track too. Ninety-two different trains are captured running along the triple track with all kinds of motive power utilized, including distributed power coal trains. Pre-merger power can also be seen, including C&NW, Southern Pacific, and Rio Grande! You won’t want to miss this show!

    In a word……. Fantastic.

Here is a video filled with action across the plains, with heavy horsepower, and some fallen flags to be seen. With meets and passes, 2 trains in a scene is not uncommon. A fine look at the small towns along the way. What is lacking in scenery is made up for with structures and buildings that serve the railroad. There is no shortage in interest in this video. An excellent production well done. Another “must have” for all railroad video collectors.

WOW(!!!) just WOW(!!!) you cannot imagine during the coal boom how many trains plied the stretch of track between North Platte and Gibbon but this video does a good job of showcasing a lot of them. I LOVE how Pentrex is able to capture this section of the UP during a time of historic traffic volumes! Coal still runs on this route today, but not with the frequency captured during this video. Also, a sufficient amount of CNW and SP power is shown shortly after their assimilation into the UP-borg.

The narration is excellent – it really explains this section of track. Great shots of Union Pacific Power. They talk about some engines that never made it into the UP fold.
