The Union Pacific route through the Cascade Mountains is so busy and so scenic that it takes a two DVD set to see it all!

Disc 1: Eugene to Cascade Summit: The Cascade Line is a vital link between the Pacific Northwest and California. This former Southern Pacific line climbs 4,422 feet on the way to the summit. Numerous tunnels, rock sheds, bridges, horseshoe curves and 40 miles of 1.6% gradient winding through thick mountain forests makes this a place you’ll not soon forget. Catch piggyback trains and Amtrak’s Coast Starlight at several locations. Many trains are identified by their symbols and you will learn where they originated and where they are going.

Disc 2: Cascade Summit to Klamath Falls: Continuing our journey along this historic line, we see the high country of southern Oregon through all seasons! See trains roll through near white-out conditions on “The Hill.” At Chemult, BNSF traffic mixes with the UP via trackage rights to Klamath Falls making for a nice variety of power including SD40-2s still in Cascade Green. Catch former Southern Pacific tunnel motors, UP’s Heritage unit #1996 in Klamath Falls on her maiden voyage and some rare footage of the Swift Roadrailer train at Calamus! Shot over a four year period in all types of weather.

In this very first 7Idea productions title, there is a lot of great diesel action on the Union Pacific at Locations like Eugene Yard & Depot in Oregon, Natron near Springfield, Dugren, Lookout Point Reservoir at Minnow, Hampton, the abandoned Tunnel 23, Westfir Covered Bridge, Oak Ridge, Pryor Siding, McCredie Springs siding, Heather siding, Salt Creek Bridge, Wicopee with a Rusty Water Pipe from the steam years, Milepost 557.3 near Tunnel 17, the Slide near Tunnel 16 at a Milepost sign referred to an Alaska Railroad 2-8-0 under Restoration, & a Bangor & Aroostook BL-2 on display, North Fields, MP555, Tunnels 14, 15, & 19 in a storm MP550, Rock Shed 12, Tunnels 11, 7, & 6, Cruzatte, Tunnel 5, Diamond Creek, Abernethy near tunnel 3, Cascade Summit, & many more spots in the west.

Motive Power is shown from GP15-1s with one unit referred to a Southern Railway 2-8-0 in Tennessee, & C40-8s, to today’s AC4400CWs & SD70MACS, with other road names like Amtrak’s Coast Starlight with Genesis unit 113 referred to a Jersey Central 0-6-0 in Pennsylvania, HLCX, SOO Line, Rio Grande, Chicago & Northwestern, BNSF, And even some musical montages.

All of these scenes were photographed in 2004, 2005, & 2006.

A couple things to know about this video: it is available in DVD format only, as it is 7idea Production’s first railroad video entry. That said, there are a few segments with very cheesy music added, which really detracts from the video. I love hearing train sounds, and I enjoy the narration, but I had to fast forward whn the music started. Beautifully shot and masterfully narrated, you will not be disappointed, despite the music and DVD-only video quality.

I would recommend this video to all of my rail fan friends. Beautiful scenery and great production quality. Worth the purchase and I think I would buy more from this producer.

Great video, beautiful scenery, lots of action. Love the winter scenes. The producers have done a great job covering the different seasons of the year. Having seen this video… be interesting to see the region in person to do some rail fanning
Pleased this video is part of my collection
