In the late 1980s and early 1990s Union Pacific was running both new super cab diesels and old favorite steam up and over Sherman Hill. The revolutionary new wide cab EMD SD60M’s and GE Dash 8-40CW’s took the lead up Sherman and were joined by steam freights pulled by 844 and 3985 of the ambitious Union Pacific steam program. Here’s your chance to become acquainted with the new super engines and renew old friendships with those super engines of the past. Narration by Rege Cordic.

    Love seeing UP in action in its home territory. Old steam and new diesels on Sherman Hill put on a spectacular show! Coincidentally, this makes a good companion show to “Heavy Freight and 3985.”

    Seeing 844/8444 painted in that attractive greyhound scheme was awesome. Very attractive. Also it was neat seeing UP run unit coal train back then with a single SD60M. Never knew they did that practice back then

    This program includes both steam and diesel action as we witness the EMD SD60M and GE C40-8W super cabs during their fist months of service, and both freight and passenger operations by Union Pacific’s steamers – 4-8-4 #844/8444 and 4-6-6-4 #3985 during 1989 and 1990.

    I like this for the 3985 steam engine and for the railroading in my blood when I grow up I’m going to work at the great somky mountains railroad when I’m outa high school all I have to do is go up there and work as simple as that!

    There is lots of great steam and diesel action from 1987-1990. Especially that pentrex was there for both of the steam specials.
