Relive the glory years of steam on the Union Pacific with all new footage in this Volume Two of Union Pacific Steam Classics. There is a wealth of variety of material in this second video. Quality varies, but you can’t go back and shoot it now! We begin with late 1950s coverage of 800 series 4-8-4’s on the line from Council Bluffs to North Platte. You’ll see mostly freight operations with a few passenger shots. At Grand Island we step back to 1938 to see engine 815 doing a special test train. These early scenes are in Black and White, while everything else is in color. Next we visit Denver and the line to Cheyenne including a chase of 4-8-2 #7012 on a train to Cheyenne. At Cheyenne we see a variety of power moving around and departing the yard. There is a neat shot of a rare doubleheader with 2 Big Boys(4-8-8-4’s) headed for Sherman Hill.

There are other Big Boy and Challenger shots, as well as other shots. One rare shot has a Big Boy helper on the front of a streamliner exiting Hermosa tunnel. In this segment we also see riding footage of a Westbound streamliner which passes 2 freights powered by Big Boys. Next we move to Laramie for a selection of scenes, by various photographers, including a nice overhead view of an 800 series arriving and being serviced at the water spout. After this we see action on the Coalmont Branch, which heads southwest out of Laramie. We see a 1956 trip with engine 535 (a 2-8-0), in 8mm, then later a 1957 excursion with the same engine. This line is completely gone now, making this is very historic. No trains sounds as this was all silent film. Music has been added.

  1. Curtis Watson

Fantastic old film of the Union Pacific in Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming. Lots of Northerns, the siblings of #844. Pacifics, Mikados, Mountains, and a few Big Boys of course! Servicing facilities at Denver, the remote but beautiful Coalmont Branch, and of course rugged and iconic Sherman Hill. This is a great successor to Volume 1, and a wonderful addition to anyone’s collection.

  2. Mwdonoughue

This program features steam in regular service, including the famous Big Boys operating over Sherman Hill, and 2-8-0 #535 in excursion service on the Coalmont Branch.

This 2011 DVD has some ups and downs during the exam of the entire system west From Council Bluffs to Laramie and the now abandoned Coalmont Branch with 535. Some noteable camera fails include a chunk of black dirt blocking the northeast corner of the screen from Perry Becker, and during one of the 535 trips, an unknown photographer was unaware that he got the camera upside down. Other than those things, most of the engines have been scrapped after regular service ended which includes some survivors such as 0-6-0 slopeback tender engine 4466, Big Boy 4004, and 844 is mentioned during some scenes of 826. Like most of Greg’s vintage programs minus the Maynard lang & Elwin Purrington programs, they were 100% silent and music from Gene Michael Productions as well as some a-ok narration From John Edward Hingsbergen is used. After the Program, there are 4 previews of All Union Pacific Steam action, Such as Steam Classics volume 1 from 2005, Big Boys & Challengers from 2008, and Union Pacific Steam Which were originally made in 1989 and converted to DVD in 2005.
