This visit to Union Pacific territory is from two visits in 1995 and 1999. In 1995 we explore a few scenes at Creston, Wyoming, the crest of the Continental Divide. Then the next day we get lucky and find the last Centennial Number 6936 on a freight from Denver to North Platte. We chase it on to North Platte. Along the way we see additional freight trains and got invited into the cab of the 6936! Next we see a train passing from inside the SD60M as the train is stopped for a meet. Along the way we also see a unit hopper train with red SD70 demonstrators as distributed power. This was a fun day seeing this one-of-a-kind and largest diesel in the world in action.

Next we are in Rock Springs, Wyoming in 1999, to see a deadhead move of UP 3985 (in steam) hauling 844 (not in steam) and the support equipment for the steam program. They are returning from Sacramento after Railfair 1999, and a SD60 leads the train, so we keep with the theme of UP In The 90’s for the diesel fan, but the steamers get this cameo look. We see some other UP freights along this route and we peel off near Green River.

The final segment is a 1999 visit to the hot spot of Gibbon, Nebraska. This is where the line from Cheyenne splits to go either to Omaha or Kansas City. We see a variety of action and motive power from SD40-2’s on a rock train, to brand new power, and foreign power. It seemed like there was always a train coming or going during our visit.

In this Diesel program from Greg’s Betacam era, there was May 2-4 1995 action of various freights with an eastbound chase of a mixed consist which contains Centennial unit 6936. Fast forward 4 years later on the 4th of July 1999, there was some small chasing of the return trip of a steam doubleheader that has challenger 3985 Operating, while 844 is dead after a Boiler explosion at Railfair ’99 on Thursday June 24, after an excursion to Tehama the previous day. The main highlight the next day July 5th is at the Hot Spot of Gibbon, NE. Where Freight after Freight came through at least every 5 minutes or more. While the main program contains the ’90s as what the title says, there is also a flashback to Greg’s JVC era in June of 1987 for 2 pacing scenes of different freights, & a quickie or 6936 at the steam shops, which was added as a bonus feature. Sadly this was the final GSVP title in the diesel category to be narrated by John Edward hingsbergen Before he lost his life in November of 2017.
