Rare film (98% color!) from the 1950s bring us back to a different time in the railroad world. First up is an introduction, quickly followed by 24 minutes that showcase 13 different Big Boys, including No. 4014 in regular freight service. Next, both early and late 4-6-6-4 Challengers are seen in action. The film continues with the 4-8-4 800s, FEF-1, FEF-2 and FEF-3 hauling both freight and passenger trains. The now famous FEF-3, #844 is shown hauling a mail train over Sherman Hill, prior to becoming “the ambassador of steam”. The final 2 chapters cover the Turbines and a variety of UP First Generation Diesels.

This DVD features the rare and original 1950s films of Mr. William Altheimer. Professionally and expertly converted to digital video, the films have outstanding clarity and color. Audio is matched to the action and appropriate narration and music complement the presentation. (JMJ Productions, Distributed by Sunday River Productions.)

Produced in conjunction with JMJ productions, this 2014 title chronicles the films of regular steam with Big Boys, Challengers, & Northerns, as well as early diesels from Turbines to Alcos.

    1. starting with the Big Boys, the engines shown in this program are 4011, 4002, 4003 in black & white on one scene & later Double-heading with 4017 that is on display at Green Bay Wisconsin, 4004 which is on display at Cheyenne, 4005 which is on display at Denver, 4009, 4010, 4013, future famous excursion star 4014, 4020, & 4022, plus a few unidentified giants.

    2. for challengers, there is 3826, 3832, 3803, 3813, 3806, 3702, 3996, 3957, & 3986. None of these engines shown in this program, survived today except for 2: 3977 at North Platte near Bailey Yard, & 3985 which used to operate between 1981-2010, & in recent years, 3985 is moved to its new home in Illinois with 5511 & 6936.

    3. for the 800 series northerns, there is 823, future famous excursion star 844 although there’s a goof that the narrator said that 844’s original number came back in 1994 when it should’ve meant 1989, plus 835, 808, 825, 830, 807, 837 double-heading with 833 that is on display in Ogden Utah, 804, & 832.

    4. for the mighty turbines, there are numbers 70, 58, 64 with Big Boy 4008, 63, & number 1. Today only 2 of these units survive: 18 at Union Illinois, & 26 with 833 at Ogden.

    5. and finally for early diesels, there are EMD E8s, E9s, F9s, GP9s with Turbine 51, F3s, Alco FA-1 number 1624, & Alco S2 1104.

    One of my favorite DVDs!
Interesting to see the 4014 in action and the turbines with early diesels working!
Well worth adding to your train library!
Rare color footage for the years recorded. It has a little of everything on 1 DVD!
If it was a video tape, I would have worn it out by now!
