We visit the busiest freight railroad in the world: Union Pacific’s Council Bluffs Subdivision. We begin trackside bright and early at the town of Fremont and followed the line west to North Platte. Along the way, we filmed plenty of action at towns along the route. In addition to Union Pacific hot spots such as Gibbon and Grand Island, we filmed a former Belt Railway of Chicago GP7 at a grain elevator and a Nebraska Central crew going about its work along the UP at Central City.
At North Platte, we visited some of the railroad displays in city parks. Highlights included Challenger #3977 and Centennial #6922 on display alongside the Hershey, Nebraska, depot in Cody Park north of downtown. We also visited another steamer on display, 2-8-0 #480, at a park south of the railroad. From there we visited the Golden Spike Tower And Visitor’s Center, where we were treated to stunning views of the action at Bailey Yard, the largest and busiest freight yard in the world. We also visited a trackside location at the west end of the yard before heading on to Gibbon.
Lloyd –
Nebraska, fast heavy trains is the norm here. Fremont to Gibbon Jct. is double track, then triple track to North Platte, a distance of 275 miles. Lots of trains are seen along the way. North Platte is a railroad town all the way, with museums, the Golden Spike Tower and the world’s largest railroad yard… Bailey Yard. This video does a fine job showing the region, & the Yard. If anything, with the number of great locations along the way (Fremont to North Platte), the video could have been longer adding more locations to see.
