Union Pacific never retired 4-8-4 number 844, she became the first in a line of significant steam locomotives to be saved and restored to operating condition and then used as ambassadors for the UP. The public loves seeing and riding behind big steam! But steam requires a lot of care, and, after the 2013 excursion season, UP 844 was pulled for major maintenance and preparation for a 15 year inspection.
844 made her public return to steam at the head of an excursion train from Denver to Cheyenne for the annual Frontier Days Rodeo. Highball Productions captured the action from the steam shop in Cheyenne to Denver and back again.

This is definitely not bad if you are a fan of previous films from Highball Productions… Pretty decent coverage of the Denver Post sponsored Cheyenne Frontier Days Train.

Nice program on the return of this classic Steam locomotive. Although I am a big Pentrex person, I really enjoyed the quality and nice narration of this program. Well done!

As a huge fan of Union Pacific Steam program, 844 has always been a goodwill ambassador for the railroad and in July 2016, she led the Cheyenne frontier days special for the biggest rodeo anywhere in the world. Ironically that same year I got my first glance of 844 in Kansas City Union station almost 3 months later and it was a memorable moment for me. There’s no special features on this one as you have to watch the movie in one whole chapter. But it’s still a fascinating movie to enjoy for many years to come.

As a first customer of this item myself from the men who made this DVD, besides this new trip the program features historic clips from other railfan DVDs which includes: “Western Steam in the 1950’s” by Main Line Motion Pictures, “UP Super cabs and steam” by WB Video, & “Steam on the Double” By Valhalla Video. Now the facts of this engine are pointed out by surprise. For example(s), One Episode of History Channel’s Trains Unlimited, & The Opening & Closing Credits of Shining Time Station, which in that case was actually the 1981 short film done by the Railroad called “Eighty-Four-Forty-Four” where you can still find it on “UP Trilogy” From Pentrex. Now about the 2-tone Gray segments on 844, Tim Says that the engine wear it throughout the ’90s, but according to some other notable Railroad Producers, the engine wore that paint scheme from 1987-1991. Overall, interesting newcomer, Great DVD for railfans. The program itself Doesn’t have a menu and Previews and independent chapters.
