See the power of Canadian Pacific steam in the 1950s tackling the high Rockies and through the Spiral Tunnels. In the fifties, in the summer, Will Whittaker dropped off a local at Yoho, mid-way between the upper and lower Spiral Tunnels to capture a continuous steam display. In one four hour period in Summer as many as ten sections of Canadian Pacific Transcontinental trains tackled Field Hill. Hiking across the face of Cathedral Peak, he shot Mikados, Santa Fes (2-10-2s), and dozens of the mighty 2-10-4 Selkirks, always double and often triple headed. Glimpses of Fraser Canyon, Revelstoke and the twice weekly mixed to Arrowhead. Then, in winter 1978, a single Hudson is photographed from Golden, through the Spiral Tunnels, to Calgary with a 1950s matched maroon, semi-streamlined consist. Closes with Royal Hudson 2860 captured on film as she makes her famous run along the cliff-ringed shore of Howe Sound.

Narration. Sunday River Productions programs may feature Color film, B&W film, Music, Dubbed Sound and still photos.

  1. rickyfreni

Originally released in 1993, this half hour program captures steam on Canadian Pacific through the famous kicking horse pass & Thompson River Canyon which includes animated maps, as well as onboard footage.

The first 5-10 minutes contains regular CP Rail Steam in the 50s, while the remainder of the program features Royal Hudson 2860 on different trips throughout 1978.

Locations include Ruby Creek, Odlum, Spuzzum, Alexandra Bridge, Revelstoke, Columbia River Bridge, Arrowhead near Williamson Lake, Field, Lower Spiral Tunnel, Yoho, Upper Spiral Tunnel, Vancouver, Stoney Creek Trestle on Rogers Pass with the streamlined Canadian, Golden, Kicking Horse River bridge,
Lake Louise depot, The Iconic S curve near Banff, Shalona Harbor, Squamish, & many more spots that feature the BC Rail Coastline.

On one scene, a tripleheader is in charge of the Toronto section of the Dominion.

  2. Train

I am so glad that this has been released – I had no idea such footage existed. CP’s pusher operations on its mainline over Kicking Horse are uniquely impressive – 3 steamers on the head of a passenger train? Yes please! Like all videos of the time, I wish that they didn’t have to be dubbed – the sound seems to match, though.
