Shortline and regional railroads are the backbone of today’s railroad industry. As Class One railroads concentrate more and more on mainline operations, smaller railroads fill the need to move goods from branch to main lines. In this volume, Pentrex visits seven shortline and regional railroads in the upper Midwest. Starting in Nebraska, we view ex-Rio Grande SD45s in service on the Nebraska Central, which runs over former UP rails. Heading north, we find the Nebraska Northeastern running on old BN iron. In Iowa, we see the Iowa Northern’s GP20 in its beautiful maroon paint scheme. This shortline traverses former Rock Island rails and connects with the Union Pacific.

Moving up to Minnesota, we catch freight and a business train on the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern. This regional railroad operates on ex-Chicago and North Western rails. While in Minnesota, we visit the now-extinct Dakota Rail and then the Minnesota Commercial with its newly-acquired Alco RS-18. The show closes with the Twin Cities and Western on the old Milwaukee Road main line. With their wide array of motive power and scenic environments, these smaller railroads offer great railroading entertainment.

Originally released in 2001, this program covers a huge variety of diesels on freight only branch lines in all 4 seasons of the year.

Here are the railroads that appeared in order:

    1. Nebraska Central that connects to Union Pacific from Columbus to Norfolk with a GP38 switching around & former Rio Grande SD45s in charge of the freight moves as well as a visit to Gillette Yard in Norfolk, not to mention a one shot look at a Ballast train east of Central city heading for Columbus, as well as the Ord branch while leaving Grand Island as Southern Pacific & UP Power appear in the background. One of the diesels on the short line is referenced to a Reading T-1 4-8-4 that is on display in Baltimore Maryland.

    2. Nebraska Northeastern from O’Neill to Sioux City with former Santa Fe & CSX units in charge on a former Burlington Northern line.

    3. Iowa Northern from Cedar Rapids to Manly on the Former Rock Island Branch that connects with UP on both ends. Here the railroad is operated by a GP20, & GP28s. At Manly Junction, a UP coal train passes by.

    4. Dakota Minnesota & Eastern running on former Chicago & Northwestern tracks to connect with Canadian Pacific at Winnona. More UP freights are shown such as one in Mankato MN. The DM&E units were originally built by CP Rail, including SD40-2 number 6070.

    5. Dakota Rail which operates on Great Northern tracks from Hutchinson to the BNSF at Wayzata. Sadly, the line was closed for good in September of 2000.

    6. Minnesota Commercial with a CP Rail Alco RS18 working in the Twin Cities during the winter on former Northern pacific tracks.

And 7. Twin Cities & Western on Milwaukee Road tracks led by former AT&SF CF7s & a GP20C. A John Deere combine is on a flatbed.

Some of these railroads appear in the best of the Midwest trilogy, while others are exclusive to this program.

Unfortunately, there are no future sequels of this program for unknown reasons.

Great show! Mostly upper midwest and Nebraska, but a great show on Railroads that dont get much attention. Would have been a great series, but there was never a volume 2!
