Visit the southern half of the Illinois Central Railroad as it existed in 1996 for an eye-opening tour of discovery. The secrets of the IC unfold as our travels take you from Fulton, Kentucky to New Orleans. Watch heavy grain and long mixed freights, locals switching pulpwood lots, fast intermodals, and trains with long strings of tank cars from the famous “Chemical Coast”. Along the way you’ll cross western Tennessee to Memphis and then into Mississippi. Trains are followed down the length of the famous Delta country where you’ll see how the IC rebuilt the line into a modern transportation artery.

Excitement builds as trains are seen climbing the hills south of Yazoo City to reach Jackson. Between Jackson and New Orleans many beautiful old passenger stations line the route and the charm of the South is evident as the rails pass through quaint, small hamlets. Informative maps and train symbols are displayed to help identify the different parts of the system. IC’s diesel roster included GP11s, GP40s, SD20s, SD40-2s, SD70s, and Paducah-built SW14s, SD28s, SD40s, GP10s, and a GP38. Hop on board as we depart for a rewarding trip down the southern half of the “Main Line of Mid-America”.

  1. Ray Bottger

With all of the mergers and acquisitions that have taken place this video takes you back to the last days of the IC. Even though this was shot during the days of the IC Death Star paint there is a mix of Amtrak and other roads to break up all of the black and white paint. The video has a good mix of through freights and locals. Overall, this is a very good video with excellent graphics and narration.

Continuing on from Vol. # 1, This video goes from Fulton Kentucky to New Orleans Louisiana. Vol. # 2 has more scenic locations, and shows some interesting old towns. But the hi-lite has to be the chemical coast and all the switching along the way. Never having been south, I was surprised to see so much pulp yards where the trains receive wood. Lots of great action in this one. And the historical part…. all before the greedy Canadian National got their hands on the Illinois Central. The screen graphics giving great information is a wonderful thing to go along with the narration. Very informative. Excellent video.

  3. Dylan Jones

This is a great video if you are a railfan, like myself, who either lived or lives in the south or just enjoy the operations of the area. Lot’s of Delta action from Priority freights to locals, this video has it all. It even those the IC’s “New” paint scheme dubbed the “Death Start” very similar to the AT&T Logo. You’ll also see the IC’s newest power, the Spartan Cab EMD SD70’s, which the IC wasn’t very fond of.
