Explore the exciting northern half of the Illinois Central Railroad from the Chicago area to Fulton, Kentucky during the pre-merger days of 1996. Pentrex takes you on a journey down the main line where you’ll see locals, switch jobs, through-freights, and fast intermodal trains hard at work. The IC intersected with a variety of other railroads on its southward trek so you’ll also be treated to the sight of Union Pacific, Conrail, Norfolk Southern, CSX, and Burlington Northern trains at those diamonds.

Train symbols are provided to enhance your understanding of how the Illinois Central fit together as a system. Mile markers, and maps of each district help identify the lines being presented and a rundown of IC’s diesel roster explains which types of units were in use. These include GP11s, GP40s, SD20s, SD40-2s, SD70s, and Paducah-built SW14s, SD28s, SD40s, GP10s, and a GP38. Here’s your opportunity to experience great action circa 1996 along the “Main Line of Mid-America”.

In Part 1 of this 2 part series, there are a ton of great diesels in the 90s on Illinois Central, Amtrak, Chicago Central, Milwaukee Road, HLCX, Chessie System, Metra Commuter Rail, Conrail, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, MPI, Chicago & Northwestern, Electro-Motive Division, CSX, Burlington Northern, & Archer Midland.

Locations for part 1 include Downtown Chicago, Markham Yard at Homewood, University Park, Manteno with a detector, Bradley, Kankakee Diamond with one unit number 1003 that is referenced to a Soo Line 2-8-2 in Wisconsin, Clifton, Ashkum Tower, Gilman Junction, Buckley, Rantoul Station, Champaign Yard with the station near the college campus, Tolono diamond, Pesotum depot, Tuscola diamond, Arcola depot, Mattoon depot, MP184 with one unit referred to a CN 10 wheeler in New Brunswick Canada, Effingham Junction, Edgewood Cutoff, Kinmundy Diamond, Odin Diamond, Centralia Junction, Ashley Diamond, Tamaroa with a pair of UP C40-8s, DuQuoin Junction with one unit referred to a CN 4-8-2 on the Alberta Prairie railroad, DeSoto, Carbondale Yard & depot near the college campus, Makanda, Cobden Hill, Dongola (home of Diverging Clear video productions), Mounds with the same unit from DuQuoin, Cairo (not Egypt) on the Ohio River Bridge, Wickliffe KY, Clinton siding, & ends at Fulton with Bluford Diamond.

Today, the IC has since been purchased by Canadian National, but it is a nice add-on to the late Greg Scholl’s Illinois Junctions series.

Excellent video from pentrex of the IC around Illinois and Chicago pre CN merger

  3. Ray Bottger

Another great video from Pentrex. While there are shots of trains rolling through the Illinois countryside there are also shots of a lot of the various power that the IC still had at this time before it was all merged away. Great video, narration, and graphics.

  4. Lloyd

The IC, before the giant Canadian National got their hands on it. Right down through the Illinois heartland in Vol. # 1, the North. No, it is not your great scenery if you are not a fan of open farm land, but lots of great train action to be seen. Along with narration, screen graphics are used for information. It’s a fine idea that I wish Pentrex used in more of their videos. Excellent Video.

  5. Warbonnet Productions

The Illinois Central has to be one of the best Class 2 railroads in the US. This DVD does a great job showing the railroad when it was still around. I hope to get part 2 soon!

This is a great product from Pentrex, It covers the northern districts of the Mainline of Mid America, From Chicago down to Kentucky. The IC was a success story and this line went under major reconstruction. See it up close and in detail with the great narration Pentrex is famous for.
