In this installment of the Clinchfield Series which was originally released as volume 1, the action begins in the pre-dawn hours in the yard as former Seaboard units & other road names like Santa Fe for example, are getting ready for another day on the rails loading, hauling, & unloading coal. Aside from the ground level shots, there are scenes from the cab. There are also some historic still images which includes 4-6-0 number 1 that is still on display at the Baltimore & Ohio Museum. Motive power is featured from Geeps & SD40-2s to the SD60s & the once Brand-New Standard Cab C40-8s. Aside from the diesels, & countless hoppers, there are still cabooses in the region.
This line is well recognized by railfans who love Mainline steam giants where in November of 1992, Union Pacific Challenger 3985 traveled all the way from Cheyenne Wyoming to be disguised as Clinchfield 676 for the entire event. Will Green frog ever convert the American Altavista version of 3985/676 to either DVD or Blu-Ray? Only time would tell.
A flashback to February 1990 is included where the town of Trammel is celebrating its 75th anniversary for the driving of the final spike on the Clinchfield line. It was sponsored by the Watauga chapter of the NRHS. Meanwhile, Chessie System 3222 is on a work train. A visit to the line in the winter is also included. One diesel is still in its B&O colors. CSX 8444 is referred to a UP northern from 1962-1989. Later on, F unit 116 & B unit 117 are shown as well as the countdown to Christmas train with Jolly old St. Nicholas himself on November 17, 1990.
Want to know something strange? The only piece of motive power on the Hayside railroad is a Cab-less B Unit with special windows added on each end.
Fun Fact: Just like the other American Altavista videos, the late Trains Magazine editor Jim Wrinn also worked on this program as well as Ron Flanary of Main Line Motion Pictures.
