Trains, ships and beautiful scenery: The Algoma Central Railway line is located near Lake Superior in the beautiful and rugged forests of Ontario. Shot between 1992 and 1993, you’ll see Algoma Central iron ore trains, general freight / pulpwood trains and the passenger / tourist operations. Locations include: Sault Ste. Marie, Hawk Junction, Wawa, Franz and Michipicoten Harbor. At Sault Ste. Marie we see ships and the Soo Locks, ACR and Algoma Steel switchers working the Steelton Yard, and the connecting roads of the Wisconsin Central and CP Rail.
Activities on the Canadian Pacific include switchers working the Sault Yard and a three unit Alco powered freight heading east for Sudbury. Plus, as an added feature, there’s also a caboose and cab ride on ACR locomotive #185 as it works the line from Hawk Junction to the sintering plant at Wawa and then on to the steep 4% grade down the hill to Michipicoten Harbor.

I was extremely disappointed in how much “mainline” running was shot. Lots of time was spent shooting yard operations and passenger trains starting and stopping at stations. If you’re a big AC fan you’ll enjoy it but for the avid fan hoping for screaming M3 air horns and lots of notch 8 running you might want to pass for $25.

Handsome locomotives and hardworking trains, set against the unspoiled backdrop of Ontario … that’s the Algoma Central. Plets Express has a knack for capturing scenes that make you feel that you’ve ventured off the beaten path to see railroads working in their “natural habitat”. Algoma Country is one of those places! Quality video from trackside and the cab of an ACR locomotive, tourist operations, Great Lakes ships, the Soo Locks and more; it’s all here, and it makes for an exceptional program!

Algoma Country, Ontario Canada, remote country that in many places the only means of travel is the railroads. This is a great production showing the passenger/tourists trains to the Agawa Canyon, freight trains serving the pulp & mining industries, ships at the Soo Locks operating across the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway….etc… Very enjoyable .
