Southern Pacific’s legendary Shasta Division was an important and challenging portion of what is now the I-5 Corridor carrying traffic between Los Angeles and Seattle. Today it remains a vital link to the Pacific Northwest for the Union Pacific.
br>In this program, we will cover nearly 170 miles of this amazing line between Redding, California and Klamath Falls, Oregon. Interesting locations covered in this DVD include the Redding Trestle, Pitt River Bridge, the famous Cantara Loop, Dry Canyon Viaduct, Dorris Tunnel and more! You’ll even see the largest operating steam locomotive in the world, Union Pacific’s Challenger #3985 making a rare appearance in the Pacific Northwest! Many trains are identified by their symbols, so you will know where they came from and where they’re going. You’ll see trains work their way up the Sacramento River Canyon to Dunsmuir, climb out of a box canyon with grades that reach 2.2 percent, reach the highest point on the Cascade Route at Grass Lake, and sprint through the high desert into Oregon.

This 2007 title covers countless comprehensive diesel action in Northern California & Southern Oregon with special scenes of not only one of the brand new Heritage Units number 1983 in Western Pacific Colors for example, but also 3985 during a September 2005 fantrip in a bonus segment, that was once the world’s largest working steam engine in the modern era from 1981 to 2010, until it was overtaken by Big Boy 4014 in late April & Early May 2019, & since November of 2022, the Challenger has since been moved to its new home at Silvis Illinois for restoration to operational condition with not only Centennial unit 6936, but also 2-10-2 number 5511 as well. Not to mention Chicago & Northwestern F7A 401 going to be as far as Boone Iowa on the same UP donation train to Silvis.

Locations include Redding depot, the Trestle at MP259 with a cab ride as well, the Pitt River Bridge at Shasta Lake under Interstate 5, Salk Creek Trestle, the S curves at Lamoine, Gibson, Sims, Castle Crag, Dunsmuir with SP 2-6-0 1727 on display as well as a turntable & sheds where the cab forwards were stored at one time, Box Canyon, Cantara Loop, Sawmill Curve near Mott, Mt. Shasta with a small namesake town itself, Black Butte, Hotlum, Dry Canyon Viaduct, Andisite, Cougar, Grass Lake, Penoyar at MP377 near the Oregon State Line, Bray, Kegg, Mt. Hebron, Dorris which is home to the nation’s second tallest flagpole, Worden OR, Midland, Texum, & ends at Klamath Falls Yard.

Castle Crag also has a small museum known as Railroad Park that a Willamette Shay built in 1927.

Aside from the UP, other road names include Cotton Belt, Santa Fe, HLCX, Burlington Northern, Amtrak’s Coast Starlight, & BNSF.

Note: the main program ran for 105 minutes, & the bonus 3985 segment ran for 7 minutes.

A dramatic look at big-time, contemporary railroading … powerful locomotives pulling long, heavy trains through a landscape that is both rugged and beautiful. As always, 7idea’s videography is well done and artistic, the sound and lighting add to the “mood”, and there’s just the right amount of meaningful narration. And UP Challenger 3985 is a nice bonus! Another “must have” from 7idea Productions.
