Norfolk Southern’s Pocahontas District recently had clearances raised for double stacks as part of the Heartland Project. Elkhorn grade between Bluefield and Iaeger is the steepest part of the Pokey, giving even Norfolk Southern’s latest SD70ACe a workout with heavy coal trains as they wind through the valleys and through the small towns of West Virginia. This is helper country, with two to three units pushing heavy trains up the grades. Lots of heavy train action on the fabled Pocahontas Division.

Narration can be turned off and on. Dolby Audio.

15 years after their first release on the Pokey, Highball returned for a sequel. Much had changed in those 15 years as the coal business had began it’s downward spiral and NS had finally embraced A.C. traction. Several of my favorite locations are visited in this program including Crozier, Huger Twin Tunnels and Farm. My cousin, William Stacy, makes an appearance on one of the coal trains heading up the grade at Crozier. That’s historic now as he left the railroad back in October. This is another great program if you like mountain railroading, my only complaint here is the fact that they didn’t ID most of the trains.

15 years since Highball made “The Pokey, Norfolk Southern’s Pocahontas Division” and the changes are ….. more traffic with the ability to move double stacks over the line now. And the power has improved with EMD’s SD70ACe’s . A great improvement for moving the heavy coal drags. Narration could have been better, but still a great production .

Highball videos are always good and this one is no exception. If you like watching modern NS power moving coal trains on steep grades through small town in Virginia and West Virginia then you will enjoy this video. They really do a good job of showing the video what operations are like in that area.

For years Coal trains and other freight have been tackling the grades of the Pocahontas District, watch the new SD70ACe’s when they were brand new lugging long coal trains through the mountains and little coal towns. Norfolk Southern really puts on a show. This is a must have for any railfan and especial NS fan.
