In 1881, the New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad achieved its identity as The Nickel Plate Road, and was known by most then as the Nickel Plate. In this production by Emery Gulash, we follow the NKP from the mid 50s to the mid 60s just prior to the railroad’s merger with the Norfolk & Western.

The Akron Canton & Youngstown, or AC&Y, was a 170 mile railroad located in Ohio, and operating west out of Akron to Delphos, near the Indiana border. There it connected to the Nickel Plate. The AC&Y was entirely Fairbanks-Morse and Alco powered. Emery followed this road from the early 60s until its demise and merger into the N&W.

This beautiful all-color program was photographed by noted 16mm film photographer Emery Gulash, and covers primarily the NKP, but no justice could be done to the NKP without including the AC&Y.

You will see steam on the NKP, as well as those Alco PA’s (the Bluebirds) on the front end of the NKP’s passenger trains. First generation diesels eventually take over those fast freights the NKP was famous for. The NKP Berkshires are predominantly featured as well. See them in their real operating environment when steam powered fast freights were king on the NKP!

Originally released in early 1992, this program covers lots of steam, diesels, & unexpected surprises on 2 fallen flag railroads that are now part of today’s Norfolk Southern for the NKP & Wheeling & Lake Erie for the AC&Y. Motive power on the NKP contains the 600 & 700 series Berkshires which one of them is referenced to a Lake Superior & Ishpeming 2-8-0 on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, the 200 series 0-8-0 switchers, the 500 series Mikados, a lone 100 series Hudson in the scrap line, Alco FPA4s, the 400 to 800 series GP9s, & the 100 series Fairbanks Morse units with a cab ride on one of them, plus an Alco RS-11, a GP18, & an Alco RS36. On the Akron Canton & Youngstown, there are a couple of diesels by Fairbanks Morse & even a special appearance by future famous surviving 4-8-4 Class T1 number 2102 from the Reading Rambles that is back in operational condition at the Reading & Northern in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.

Locations include Lima Ohio home of the town’s own Locomotive works, Loraine, Vermillion siding, Fort Wayne Indiana, New Haven (with 767 but sister engine 765 resides there), Bellevue, Michigan City, Tower F Junction at Fostoria, with a Chesapeake & Ohio Freight, Canton, & other spots on this unique fallen flag railroad.

These films were photographed during the spring of 1954, the fall of 1956, the fall of 1957, June & July of 1958, May 1959, May 1960, June 1961, May 1962 with some rare snow on the ground, July 1963, & April 1971 (A month before Amtrak’s Debut).
