The Locomotive that Built our Railroads, the 4-4-0, America’s Standard

By the 1850s, America’s railroads had settled on the 4-4-0 as the standard locomotive for their needs. These locomotives served the rapidly growing East and conquered the West in every kind of service and terrain and continued well into the twentieth century. Some were still running in the 1950s.
