Known as the Desert Princess or the Slim Princess, this line was a rarity: a narrow gauge owned by a major railroad. The Carson and Colorado Railroad was chartered in 1880 to connect with the Virginia and Truckee at Mound House, Nevada, near Carson City. The line was built to three foot gauge running south to tap the mineral resources of southern Nevada. By 1883, the line reached its full extent, crossing into California and the Owens River valley as far as Keeler, California. In 1900, the line became a subsidiary of the Southern Pacific.

First the program starts with a map of the SP Narrow Gauge, then comes the action with a future famous surviving 10 wheeler known as the slim princess number 18 while working on the Keeler Branch, despite that sister engine number 9 is on a standard gauge flatbed to Bakersfield & later on, it operates on the Zurich Line. Even though that engine is still on display today.

On the Standard Gauge, 2-8-2 number 3203 appears on the Jawbone local in Mojave.

Locations on the since been ripped up narrow gauge lines of the fallen flag in the American West that is owned by Union Pacific since 1996 include: Owenyo, Mt. Whitney, Keeler Depot & Yard, Kearsarge tank, Bigalow, Laws, Aberdeen, the Owens River bridge, & Zurich.

In the Winter, since been scrapped 10 wheeler number 8 is operating on a mixed freight.

An Epilogue is included as a March 2007 Visit was made by Gary Gerski as number 18 used to be on display in Independence, but is recently restored to operational condition while visiting Colorado’s Durango & Silverton.

This program was made in Co-Operation with Catenary Video Productions.

Overall, Ted Dalaku did a fantastic job narrating this program.

I’ve read true posts and rumors that a history museum in Independence, CA has been working on a project of not just a 3-foot gauge locomotive but a defunct railway line as well. This is great for the world of railfans to come.
