Railroaders called it ‘The Chama Turn’, and sometimes the Cumbres Turn. Most railfans knew the operations over Cumbres simply as the Cumbres Pass Route.

In the mid 60s, noted photographer Emery Gulash brought his 16 mm Bolex to Colorado to capture all the nuances of Colorado Rocky Mountain railroading at its best. His keen eye for composition, his patience for waiting for just the right shot, plus his dedicated railfan attitude now provide us with exquisite remembrances of that which was narrow gauge. Many ‘turns’ out of Chama are shown, as well as runs to Antonito. Classic photography from one of the great masters of the motion picture camera are depicted in this amazing production!

Through the Films of Mr. Emery Gulash, this program covers the final years of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Narrow Gauge’s 4th division on the route of today’s Cumbres & Toltec.

Locations include the Alamosa to Antonito dual gauge line, Alamosa Yard, Antonito Yard, the 10,015 ft. Cumbres Depot with a later abandoned snow shed during the winter, Chama Yard, Chama River bridge, Fred Jukes Tree, Lobato Lake, Wolf Creek over Lobato Trestle, Dalton, Coxo at Highway 17, Windy Point, Tanglefoot Curve, & Los Pinos.

Some of the 2-8-2s are captured such as 487 (still on the C&TS), 493 (still on the Durango & Silverton), 492 (Still on Display in Chama), 484 (Still on the C&TS), 498 (Still on Display in Durango), & even an appearance by Rotary Snowplow OM at the Chama Yard. Not to mention a couple of diesels at Alamosa.
