Step back to the mid 1990s to enjoy the sight of beautifully painted diesels shining in the brilliant sun as they operate through the scenic landscapes of the California Northern. You’ll see sugar beets delivered to a sugar plant and watch GP15 locomotives grinding up Creston Hill with a pipe train. You’ll also talk to and ride with one of the railroad’s engineers and ride in the cab of a venerable SD9 on the Willits Turn. Exploring the West Valley Sub, you’ll chase beet trains along the route. Then you’ll visit the Napa Sub, Napa Junction, and the line to Vallejo.

West of Napa Junction, you’ll follow the Petaluma Turn over drawbridges and past vineyards, then catch the Hopland Turn and track it north to its interchange with the Willits Turn. While riding aboard the train, you will experience an exciting trip through scenic Cloverdale Canyon along the Russian River. Your tour concludes with a thrilling ride across Ridge Summit aboard the Willits Turn. Heavy loads of lumber from the north are hauled over this steep mountain grade and down the treacherous slope to Ukiah. The California Northern Railroad delivers great regional railroading at its very finest!

This 1995 Pentrex title showcases a good variety of diesels on the former Southern Pacific tracks through the forests carrying lots & lots of lumber & sugar beets at locations like Napa Junction near Lombard Yard & San Pablo Bay, Broadway Street on the Vallejo Subdivision, the Napa sub, Creston Hill, Suisun Junction, Woodland on the West Valley Sub, Davis Wye, a detector at MP100, Arbuckle, Harrington Siding, the Hamilton Sub, the Glen Calusa Canal, the West Side Sub at Tracy, Patterson, a steam engine only water tower at Westly, Lyoth Diamond, American Canyon Office, the Brazos Lift Bridge, the Sonoma Sub, Vineburg at the Nichols Turkey Farm, Schellville to connect with the Sonoma Pacific Lumber Co, the Northwestern Pacific sub, the Black Point Swing Bridge, Novato near highway 101, the Petaluma Swing Bridge, Burdell Siding, Santa Rosa, Geyserville, Cloverdale Canyon with 5 tunnels, Hopland, the summit of Ridge hill, Laughlin & ends at Willits to connect with the Skunk Train.

Motive power for the California Northern includes mostly GP15-1s (with one of them referenced to a Jersey Central 0-6-0 in Minersville Pennsylvania), & a quartet of SD9s, plus a former SP Alco S1 on Holly Sugar Co.

Did you know that the largest customer for the California Northern is Anheuser-Busch as well as General Mills cereal, not to mention the Napa Pipe Company?

A cab ride with an interview from Mrs. Donna Poynor is included as well as Bruce Livingston near a feed & supply plant.

Aside from the California Northern itself, there are other road names like the Holly Sugar Company, & a mention of both the Napa Valley Wine Train & California Western Tourist lines.

GO BACK TO THE 1990’S FOR THIS ONE. SEE BEAUTIFULLY PAINTED TRAINS AND SCENIC NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. GO TO THE NAPA SUB, NAPA JUNCTION, AND MANY MORE INTERESTING SPOTS. GO PASS VINE YARDS AND SEE THE PETALUMA TURN, ALSO THE BEAUTIFUL CLOVER DALE CANYON ALONG THE RUSSIAN RIVER. LOTS MORE BEAUTIFUL STOPS AND SCENERY ALONG THE WAY. 5 STARS AND 1 HOUR AND 40 MINUTES LONG.

This is one of my favorite types of train videos. One that documents a railroad in it’s entirety. You will see cab rides, chase trains and learn each of the jobs. You will also see the dispatchers office.

This video is awesome. It documents a shortline railroad with lots of operation. Will an all EMD roster, this film will please anyone that watches. GP-15’s and SP9 Cadillac’s keep the railroad moving and are painted in a very attractive paint scheme. Riding along with the female Engineer is also a great touch. Highly recommended!
