The Eastern Tennessee & Western North Carolina was the last active narrow gauge railroad in the Blue Ridge. This DVD is the definitive “Tweetsie” visual experience. The ET&WNC Historical Society approached A&R Productions to put these rare films on DVD. Here is the “Tweetsie” during 1942 and 1943, when in addition to wartime freight traffic, the line was operating mandatory passenger service for the war board to handle commuter traffic to and from the defense plants at Port Rayon.

This is truly rare film from a long lost railroad gem. Follow the little ten-wheelers from Johnson City yard, through Elizabethton, Hampton, Blevins, Roan Mountain and Elk Park to Cranberry. Experience the raw beauty of the Doe River Gorge. Watch the passenger consists being wyed at Cranberry and Port Rayon, freight crews switching along the line and two “crew members” with cameras! Our crew returned in 1949, with but a year left until abandonment. The passenger service and the little line is struggling to stay solvent.

Originally released in 1995, this program covers the vintage films of these 4-6-0 10 wheelers in revenue service, especially number 12 that is still operating at the Tweetsie Scenic Railroad in Blowing Rock, not to mention former Richmond Fredericksburg & Potomac 0-6-0 standard gauge engines like 205 for example.

Locations include Johnson City, Cranberry, Elizabethton, Valley Forge, Hampton, Blevins, Roan Mountain, Elk Park, State Line Hill, Shell Creek, Crabtree, Bemberg, Little Man’s Cut, Big Man’s Cut, Hardy Point, & along the Doe River with Sharp Curves, Valley Forge Bridge, Port Rayon, & 5 Tunnels which the narrow gauge also connects with both the Southern & the Clinchfield.

Aside from the steam engines, there are also dual gauge rails with a ride on the rear of the caboose pulled by number 11 & even a passenger train with the same engine that has since been gone for scrap, motorcar number 1, & even Tractor Trailer Trucks. There is also a couple of scenes of Jack Alexander whose own films of other road names in the 40s also appeared in some vintage Greg Scholl steam & diesel shows. Not to mention Mr. Lum Johnson doing some hand signals while working on the railroad.

All of these 16mm color films were captured by both Jack & Mr. Vincent Ryan, & like most of the other A&R titles, Ted Dalaku did a marvelous job narrating this soon to be 30-year-old title.

Wow! Hard to believe the scenery in this area and the beautiful equipment. Little, dainty 4-6-0’s and wooden cars just scream railroading. Lots of interesting history too as the Tweetsie was a vital link in the WWII effort. What a shame to know it’s all gone now. Great train action and scenes.

Yes, Virginia………there is narrow gauge besides in Colorado! The Tweetsie was a very interesting railroad set in a virtually inaccessible location. In spite of that this video has captured a ton of action and scenes along the line. Beautiful little 4-6-0’s tackling steep and curvy grades are enough to take your breath away. What a loss to have the railroad taken away from us.
