This is Tehachapi prior to the big mergers, in never-before-seen footage photographed in 1988 over Tehachapi Pass between Bakersfield and Mojave, California. In 1988 it was owned by the SOUTHERN PACIFIC with trackage rights by the ATCHISON TOPEKA & SANTA FE. Southern Pacific’s unit oil tank train, known as the “Oil Can” is featured in many scenes.

The red and yellow SF and SP paint are still seen on Tehachapi. Motive power includes the GP60, C30-7, SD45, GP50 and many others. The Caboose was fast disappearing from America’s railroads, but in 1988 they were still a common sight on Tehachapi trains. So return now…for ten glorious days…to this memorable location and time in railroad history. Two discs, 3 and a half hours.

Great views of Tehachapi Pass in a bygone era of railroading. Unit trains, manned helpers, and cabooses abound! Nice to see the SPSF Kodachrome scheme still around at the time.

A nostalgic look at perhaps the most often-done topic in railfan video: classic paint schemes, vintage locomotives, consists from a generation ago, and plenty of smile-inducing surprises. For video that is now more than thirty years old, the footage is surprisingly good, with just enough imperfections (that’s not a criticism) to add to its charm. Fallen flags, Kodachromes, cabooses … watching this video back-to-back with a more contemporary program points out that in some ways, railroading on Tehachapi has changed a great deal — and in some ways it hasn’t changed much at all. For the quality, the length (three and a half hours) and the memories, this might be one of the best values in railfan video.

Yes..yet another Tehachapi pass DVD, and at 3.5 hours in length, this is a LOT of ATSF & SP !!
The sequences were all shot during 1988 over a 10 day period. There’s lovely scenes of gleaming ATSF ( and even some SP at times ) units in yellow bonnet and the Kodachrome merger livery from both railroads. Full trains of cars with no grafitti and well wagons/double stacks are no where to be seen. All intermodal is TOFC/COFC, which will be of interest to modellers. Espees’ “Oil can” train is shown in quite a few scenes. Other units from UP, BN, Southern, and leasers also make appearances over the course of the show.
The disc is divided up into days and shows random locations from each day, rather than a “end to end” look. Commentary is minimal with basic train info and locations given.
The only negative I can find to this disc was an audio issue that started near the end of the first disc, and occurred on random scenes on the second disc. A pop/crackle type sound can be heard at times, which I’m guessing was introduced during the transfer of the master when this was made into a DVD. I can only assume mine isn’t a one off with the issue. Having said that, I wouldn’t let it deter anyone from purchasing this, footage of this quality from this era is hard to come by.
If you are a fan of the ATSF and SP, this disc is a must have.

I spent a lot of time railfanning around Tehachapi in the mid to late 80’s and this video brings back to many of those memories. Their is some great footage of mountain railroading around Tehachapi with classic standard cab power and ATSF cowl bodied units. I watched this video several times and never get tired of it.
