Stevens Pass stands at an elevation of 4,061 feet above sea-level in the heart of the Pacific Northwest’s Cascade Mountains. Large granite outcroppings tower above the densely forested landscape creating a cool, wet rainforest on the west and semi-arid country on the east. Weaving through this seemingly impassible barrier is a transcontinental railroad connecting the heartland of America with the Pacific Northwest and the Orient. BNSF Railway utilizes a historic route carved by John F. Stevens over 100 years ago. A continuous parade of long and heavy trains roll back and forth over the beautiful terrain on what is fittingly named the Scenic Subdivision. 7idea Productions traveled to the State of Washington in May of 2010 to document current operations over this former route of the Great Northern between Everett and Wenatchee. Witness long stack trains crossing beautiful mountain streams, heavy grain trains thundering up 2.2% grades with mid and rear-end DPU’s plus Amtrak’s Empire Builder on its daily run between Chicago and Seattle.
The highlight of the line is the famous 7.8 mile Cascade Tunnel, the longest tunnel in the United States. See how smoke and fumes are flushed out of the tunnel in between trains. Plus hear about the 1910 Wellington avalanche which swept two trains off the mountain. No one ever said mountain railroading was easy and you’ll see why in “Stevens Pass, BNSF Railway’s Scenic Sub”!

With Stevens Pass at an Elevation of 4061 Feet above sea level, there is a parade of great diesel action in Washington State with Road Names Like BNSF (Today’s Pumpkins, & Old School Fallen Flags) with 2 red & silver AT&SF Warbonets referenced to 2 Nickel Plate Road Berkshires on Display: 759 & 763, & another warbonet referred to a Savannah & Atlanta 4-6-2 in Georgia, Norfolk Southern, CSX, & Amtrak’s Empire Builder with a genesis unit referenced to a Jersey Central 0-6-0 in Minersville PA.
Locations include Everett which is the headquarters of the Kimberly Clark Baby Product Factory along Pugent Sound as well as a small caboose on display, not to mention a bus with a Shrek 4 movie poster rolling by the 2002 depot, Lowell, Monroe Siding, MP1763, Skykomish River at Goldbar, the bridge at MP1753.4, Index, West Baring Siding, South Fork, Skykomish depot at MP1732, Foss River Trestle at MP1728.2, Deception Falls Bridge, East Scenic Siding, Windy Mountain with some black & white stills, Cascade Tunnel with night scenes, Berne, Gaynor Trestle, MP1695.2, White Pine Creek, Merritt Wye, Winton Siding & Tunnel, Wenatchee River Bridge at Plain, Icicle Ridge, Leavenworth, Peshastin, Dryden, Turkey Shoot Road, Cashmere, Monitor, Wenatchee which is home to one of the largest Apple farms in America, & Olds Junction.

If ever a railroad subdivision was aptly named, it’s the Scenic Sub. Everything about “Stevens Pass” is fantastic … the setting, the trains, the camerawork, the editing, the narration. And the pervasive weather … fog, haze and low-hanging clouds … creates a moody feeling that 7idea manages to convey through its usual stellar videography. One of the best in a long line of winners from 7idea Productions.

Another outstanding production by 7 Idea. A great job showing the trains passing through some of America’s finest scenery. Cascade Tunnel is indeed a highlite of the show . Excellent . Recommended for all rail fans
