With the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society’s beautiful, and beautifully restored, Nickel Plate Berkshire #765, you get both a NKP Berk and a C&O Kanawha on this trip. The 765 pulled the New River Train painted for – disguised as – a Cheapeake & Ohio Kanawha. Of course the C&O Kanawha was just another name for whateverone else called a berkshire, so it was an easy makeover. Whatever you want to call it, the makeover was a success and htis trip was a success. This video is one of the better shows to catch the 765 on her New River travels. Skyfire is a professional videographer, a storyteller in video, and you will notice the difference right away.

This well put together feature-length film gives one a unique new perspective as to what exactly occurred in October 1993 for the annual New River Train excursions. The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society and the Collis P. Huntington Chapter of the NRHS, in cooperation with CSX, put on one last show through “Wild, Wonderful” West Virginia with Nickel Plate Berkshire #765. Our beloved 2-8-4 looked right at home on the former C&O from Huntington to Hinton, appropriately disguised as an actual Chesapeake and Ohio Kanawha. The program starts out with some actual background/history of how the railroads built West Virginia. There are several historical photographs and pieces of footage, including those of the New River Gorge back when technology was much more primitive. Following these introductory minutes, Jim Mitchell and his camera crew take us straight to the rail yard in Huntington, where the first part of this celebrated journey begins. You will get to see the locomotive up-close and personal, as the team prepares it for the grueling, yet exciting 300-mile round trip through West Virginia’s most spectacular scenery. You will enjoy watching NKP #765 push all her 4,000 horsepower and 64,135 pounds of tractive effort to the limit lugging over 30 private cars full of excited passengers through the breathtaking countryside. By itself, our beloved Berk did so well what takes THREE modern Amtrak diesels in today’s world. At numerous points throughout the film, Jim and his crew take us to several scenic, secluded “side-trip” locations along the route. Their shots of the rich autumn colors in these peaceful spots absolutely takes your breath away. There are some informative interviews throughout the entire program with engineer Rich Melvin, historians/retired railroaders, and even the late, great Tom Stephens. Jim does some SUPERB narration and commentary as well.

In this 100 minute program from 1995, there is an incredible journey from Huntington to Hinton West Virginia that features not only Milwaukee road 261 in 1994, but also Nickel plate road 2-8-4 number 765 that was transformed to Chesapeake & Ohio 2765 in 1993. Amazingly enough, some flashbacks to the 80s with 765 & Greenbrier 614 in 1985 were filmed by none other than noteworthy/future famous America by rail producer Greg Scholl. Overall Jim Mitchell did an incredible job narrating this program.
