Four of the largest steam locomotives attending Railfair ’91 in Sacramento, California, arrived pulling special trains. Pentrex captured some fantastic images of steam at work as the engines headed for the exciting West Coast event.
Union Pacific 844 and the 3985 departed Cheyenne, Wyoming for California on April 15. Pentrex followed the entire route of these magnificent machines as they doubleheaded on their way west. Pentrex crews also captured Southern Pacific Daylight engine 4449 on its two-day trip from Portland, Oregon to Sacramento. The engine makes a magnificent sight as it works through the mountains of Oregon and California.
Experience the excitement as Southern Pacific 2472, a Pacific type engine, makes its first run following a lengthy restoration. Later, Southern Pacific engines 2472 and 4449 double-headed an excursion train to Oakland, California. That was the first time steam engines had double-headed on the Southern Pacific in many years.

This program is considered a prequel/sequel to ‘Sacramento Railfair 1991’ as it covers the ferry moves of the big steam locomotives to and from the event. Locomotives featured in this program include the Union Pacific #844 – painted in two-tone grey paint – and Challenger #3985 – on its first major trip after being converted to burn oil, along with the Southern Pacific ‘Daylight’ #4449 and the newly restored #2472.

I love how they document every single locomotive on their way to railfair 91. I especially enjoyed the Union Pacific doubleheader from Cheyenne, Wyoming. UP 844 looked great in its grey color scheme at the head of the train.

For anyone who is a fan of UP and/or SP mainline steam excursions, this DVD is an excellent one to buy. All four of steam locomotives featured put on a great show. Pentrex did an excellent job documenting the moves of all four locomotives to Railfair 91.

This is new on DVD and is a very well produced documentary of the steam locomotives that headed to Sacramento in 1991 for the NRHS convention. It is a real nice video for all die hard steam fans and a must have for the true rail fan.
