The biggest steam locomotives in the country traveled to Sacramento in June 1999 to attend the last Railfair of the 20th century. Pentrex captured Union Pacific 844 and 3985, and Southern Pacific 4449 as they made their way to Sacramento from their home terminals.
Pentrex camera crews filmed so much great footage, it wouldn’t all fit into our epic program Sacramento Steam ’99. So we assembled this video from all new sequences featuring the UP 844/3985 doubleheader from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Roseville, California and SP Daylight 4449’s journey from Portland, Oregon to Sacramento.
This DVD presents the locomotives with all natural sound and no narration. On-screen graphics indicate the location of each runby. Thrilling mainline steam action awaits you in Steam to Railfair ’99!

This production is a very complete look back at the “Dynamic Duo’s” journey to Sacramento in 1999. There definitely ARE lots of angles which are NOT included in the sequel, “Sacramento Steam ’99”. This was, once again, another rare opportunity to see #844 and #3985 doublehead through Union Pacific and Southern Pacific territory. Both locomotives looked as gorgeous as ever, and Steve Lee (along with the rest of the steam crew) put on a FINE show through our great Western States of the Lower 48… Same with Doyle McCormack and the rest of the SP 4449 crew.
Little did we know that two decades after the final 20th Century Railfair event, our country (and the world, frankly) would be blessed with Big Boy #4014 returning to the rails in 2019. Nevertheless, in their prime, the Challenger and the Living Legend were quite a pair. Don’t miss out on all this extra footage. Purchase this DVD, along with “Sacramento Steam ’99”, TODAY! 🙂

I would have liked some narration, plus more scenes of 844 and 3985 on Donner, but overall there is nothing bad about this footage. You’ll like this one, probably even more-so when paired with the show about Railfair ’99 itself!

Worth the money and the sounds of three steam locomotives on their way to take part of rail fair 99 in Sacramento.

This program is a sort of prequel to ‘Sacramento Steam ’99’, as it features both the UP 844/3985 doubleheader and the SP 4449 as they make their way to Railfair ’99.

I always wanted to hear of a steam engine in action without Narration and this really took the cake.

Well, as this un-narrated pentrex dvd took place during “Sacramento Steam ’99”, This is more of an Ultimate Deleted Scenes video for all of the UP & SP Segments.
