Join NostalgiaRAIL and noted Japanese “Densha Otaku” (Railfan) Toshi-san as we take a look at steam operations on the Japan National Railways between 1965 and the end of steam operations in 1972. Everything from the C11 Tank engines to the famous D51 mikados are seen in all kinds of service
Japan, which has a higher railfan per person than any other nation, was on the forefront of steam preservation, both in media formats and physical locomotives. These 8mm sound films are presented in original, well preserved condition and makes the experience much more enjoyable as trains work up grades up to 3.4%.
From long distance mixed freights, which have since been replaced by container trains by successor JR Freight, to locals working short 3 kilometer branchlines and double headed express passenger trains with pairs of C62 class Pacifics, you will marvel at how these meter gauge (3ft 6in) locomotives can attain speeds up to 60 MPH on the well maintained right of ways and the loud bark of exhaust as trains labor uphill and over Utso Pass. This is one steam video you will not want to miss out on.
