So much steam! Including Strasburg Rail Road #475 (Ex-N&W). We see #475 in station shots and several trackside runbys, plus being serviced.

Our next stop is in Sugar Creek, Ohio, for the Ohio Central Railroad and OC #1551. A tourist train operated the 5 miles to Baltic and back. 1551 is an ex-Canadian National 4-6-0. (Some of this footage was used in our previous America By Rail series). Alas, the Ohio Central was sold to a shortline operator and 1551 has not operated since the early 2000s.

The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad with #734 operates from Cumberland, Maryland to Frostburg – a mostly upgrade trip. This is all new footage shot in October 1995, with beautiful fall colors as a backdrop. There is a shot at Brush Tunnel, one in the valley, some at Cumberland, and we end with famous Helmstetter’s Curve in the afternoon. 734 is now out of service.

The final stop on this video is a 1995 visit to the Kentucky Railway Museum in New Haven, Kentucky. Our star is former Louisville and Nashville 4-6-2 #152. This was our first visit to the museum, but we’ve seen this engine several times when it ran mainline excursions between 1985 and 1988. We will first ride the train departing New Haven toward Boston, with only a few views from the coach vestibule. We chased the last trip in the afternoon, after getting some close-up shots at Boston when we rode the train. There are two really nice scenes, including a departure shot in New Haven, and a fast-moving shot closer to Boston. 152 is out of service and hopefully someday will be restored to operation once again. It last operated in 2011.

We think you will enjoy this look at 4 different operations in the eastern portions of the United States. Live audio and minimal narration.

  1. Jeremy C. Schultz

Greg Scholl did an excellent job compiling this one…
Norfolk and Western 4-8-0 #475 at Strasburg and
2-8-0 #734 at Western Maryland Scenic are definitely the highlights.

In this installment of Greg’s steam in the 90s trilogy, there is 1994 coverage of N&W 475 at the Strasburg railroad in Lancaster county Pennsylvania which includes a relaxing music piece showing Amish farmers & their horses at work. More Amish scenery continues on the Ohio Central in sugar creek during June of 1994 with CN 1551 moving a boxcar in the siding, as well as handling multiple trips to Baltic the following day. There is also an October 2001 visit to see 1551 during production of 6325 return to steam. While 475 & 1551 appeared in the heartland during 1994, there are 2 more steam locomotives that Greg recorded on one weekend in October of 1995: former Lake Superior & Ishpeming 2-8-0 734 at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad on a Saturday, & Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 152 at the Kentucky railway museum the following Sunday. Like many of Greg’s 2018 titles minus 819 Arkansas steam & return to Deshler, this was narrated by Christopher Kovacs (trainmaster844).
