The age of steam came to its finale’ in the early 1950s. Photographers Ted Carlson and Rolf Nordquist captured this end of steam at its finest. From 16mm color films you’ll witness the splendid action captured as steam bid it’s farewell.

We’ll see Northern Pacific steam, Klickitat Lumber, Rayonier Lumber, Hillcrest Lumber (Shays, and Climaxes in these three sections!) Canadian Steam in Western Canada, Mallets of the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range, and Norfolk & Western Class A’s and J’s plus more.

    This 3rd & final volume of the Green Frog’s Steam in the 50s Trilogy features more vintage railroading action with fallen flags, & some survivors.

    Here’s the segments shown in order:

    1. Simpson Timber Co. 2-8-2 Tank Engine 16

    2. Northern Pacific with 4-8-4 2626, & 4-6-0 1372

    3. Union Pacific with 2 scenes of 844 as 8444 from 1962 to 1989, & mostly Articulated Giants like Challengers 3703, 3712, & likely 3708, with a mention of 3985, & Big Boys with 4015, future survivor 4014, another survivor 4017, & 4019

    4. Lake Watkin Railway with NP 0-6-0 1070

    5. Klickitat Lumber Shay 7 near Mt. Rainier

    Fun Fact: some of the footage by Maynard Laing in this program was also used in several titles by the late Greg Scholl, mostly on 1372 & the Yellowstones. Not only that, but some Articulated scenes were also used in Steam Giants Across America.
