Watch all the excitement of four big mainline steam locomotives as they operate for the 1990 NRHS Convention in St. Louis. You will see all the convention excursions, plus the inbound and outbound runs of the all four of the these rare, big, mainline steam engines. Begin with the Norfolk and Western 2-6-6-4 Class A #1218 from Columbus, Ohio on the Independence Limited en route to St. Louis, and Cotton Belt 4-8-4 #819 from Pine Bluff to St. Louis, while Union Pacific 4-8-4 #844 is inbound from Kansas City. During the convention all 4 engines were on display at St. Louis Union Station, a treat to behold with 4 huge mainline steamers together at one location. Excursions included hometown Frisco 4-8-2 #1522 on a round trip to Newburg, Missouri, and a trip for 844 to Findlay, Illinois.
After the convention festivities there was a special treat, as 844 headed back west, with 1522 as the helper engine as they double-headed to the National Museum of Transport at Kirkwood where 1522 is kept. There is great coverage of the doubleheader which was one of highlights of the week. Two camera crews covered these events which can never be repeated with these locomotives.

St. Louis Steam 1990 has always been my #1 favorite excursion steam trips and they always put on a great show for steam enthusiasts whether you’re young or old. Lots of good highlights were showed in the video and the whistle salute meeting at Delta, MO with SSW (Cotton Belt) 4-8-4 #819 and St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern #5 was a fascinating moment for me and I don’t feel any excursion trips will never be match or duplicated.
