Watch all the excitement of four big mainline steam locomotives as they operate for the 1990 NRHS Convention in St. Louis. You will see all the convention excursions, plus the inbound and outbound runs of the all four of the these rare, big, mainline steam engines. Begin with the Norfolk and Western 2-6-6-4 Class A #1218 from Columbus, Ohio on the Independence Limited en route to St. Louis, and Cotton Belt 4-8-4 #819 from Pine Bluff to St. Louis, while Union Pacific 4-8-4 #844 is inbound from Kansas City. During the convention all 4 engines were on display at St. Louis Union Station, a treat to behold with 4 huge mainline steamers together at one location. Excursions included hometown Frisco 4-8-2 #1522 on a round trip to Newburg, Missouri, and a trip for 844 to Findlay, Illinois.

After the convention festivities there was a special treat, as 844 headed back west, with 1522 as the helper engine as they double-headed to the National Museum of Transport at Kirkwood where 1522 is kept. There is great coverage of the doubleheader which was one of highlights of the week. Two camera crews covered these events which can never be repeated with these locomotives.

As always, Greg Scholl delivers a production which never fails to disappoint. I would say that Pentrex has THEIR own unique style of covering this event, which was nice… but Greg provides a whole new look at the 1990 NRHS Convention that you never would have seen otherwise if he and his team were not present. Although not quite as long of a film as what Pentrex has to offer, the camera angles are just as good and the sound from different stereo microphones provides a more “closeup” feel.

This program is filled with lots of amazing steam action:
    – Norfolk & Western 2-6-6-4 #1218 on the Independence Limited from Columbus, OH to St. Louis.
    – Union Pacific 4-8-4 #844 enroute to St. Louis from Kansas City.
    – St. Louis Southwestern/Cotton Belt 4-8-4 #819 from Pine Bluff, AR to St. Louis.
    – UP 844 excursion to Findlay Junction, IL
    – All 4 engines on display at St. Louis Union Station
    – Frisco 4-8-2 #1522 excursion to Newburg, MO
    – Cotton Belt 819 one-way trip from St. Louis to Illmo, MO, followed by the locomotives return to Pine Bluff.
    – 844 and 1522 doubleheader from St. Louis to Kirkwood, MO

Dome highlights include 819 exchanging whistle salutes with St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern #5, and 844 enroute to the 1984 New Orleans Worlds Fair, when it was still numbered 8444.

St. Louis Steam 1990 has always been my #1 favorite excursion steam trips and they always put on a great show for steam enthusiasts whether you’re young or old. Lots of good highlights were showed in the video and the whistle salute meeting at Delta, MO with SSW (Cotton Belt) 4-8-4 #819 and St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern #5 was a fascinating moment for me and I don’t feel any excursion trips will never be match or duplicated.
